Mandatory covid test at PVG today!

Entered PVG today and all foreigner visitors were required to register for a health screening and do a covid mouth swap. Seemed similar to DNA test with a cheek swab but they said COVID. Kids were exempt.

Very surprising!

It appears that Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) has reinstated mandatory COVID-19 testing for foreign arrivals as part of its current health and safety protocols. This is likely in response to ongoing monitoring requirements and to prevent any new outbreaks. From your observation, children were exempt from the test, which is common in many airports for minors under a certain age.

Here are some key points to know:

  • Registration and Health Screening: All foreign passengers are required to register on-site for a health screening. This usually involves providing personal information, flight details, and possibly vaccination or recent test status.
  • COVID Swab Test: The test you described is a mouth or cheek swab, similar in technique to a DNA test but specifically designed to detect COVID-19 infection. Results are typically processed within a few hours to a day, depending on the system in place.
  • Children Exemption: Children, especially very young ones, are generally exempt from mandatory testing at entry points. However, some airlines or local authorities may have different rules for different age groups.

Practical advice for travelers arriving at PVG:

  • Allow extra time upon arrival for the registration and testing process, as it can take 30–60 minutes depending on the queue.
  • Have your travel documents, passport, and flight information ready for quick registration.
  • If traveling with children, prepare documentation for age verification in case needed.
  • Check your airline and local government websites for the latest COVID entry requirements before travel, as these protocols can change with short notice.

Overall, while it can be surprising to face testing again, this measure is intended to ensure public health safety in the airport and throughout the region. Being prepared will help smooth your arrival process.
