What to see/do in one day Yakutat
We'll be arriving in Yakutat on a Sunday morning and have the whole late morning/ afternoon open. Is there more than one company that brings people to see Hubbard Glacier (the one I found is very pricey). Favorite hikes? Must see/do. We'll be fishing the next 4 days. Then might have a morning at the end before we flight out to see/do something. We love wildlife, hiking, kayaking, etc. Thanks!
Yakutat is a remote and stunning part of Alaska, offering a mix of glaciers, wildlife, and coastal landscapes. With only a day to explore before your fishing trip, you’ll want to focus on the highlights that are accessible in a half- to full-day timeframe.
For Hubbard Glacier viewing:
- Most glacier tours in Yakutat are by air (flightseeing) or by boat. Hubbard Glacier is massive and can be seen from different perspectives depending on your budget and timing.
- Yes, there is more than one operator, but options are limited. Prices tend to be high due to the remote location and small-scale operations. You might find slightly lower prices through local lodges or small charter companies, but availability can vary.
- If a full glacier tour is too expensive, consider a shorter flightseeing tour that still gives dramatic views, or a scenic drive/hike near local rivers and coastal areas that provide views of tidewater glaciers or nearby mountains.
Hiking options around Yakutat:
- Yakutat Forelands: Coastal trails with easy hikes where you can spot eagles, seals, and occasionally bears at a safe distance.
- Hubard Glacier viewpoint trails: Some short hikes or viewpoints near the harbor offer accessible glacier vistas without committing to a full tour.
- Lake and river trails: The Situk River area is excellent for birdwatching and light hiking, with boardwalks and easy trails for a relaxed half-day exploration.
Other recommended activities:
- Kayaking in protected coves near Yakutat Bay if time allows—local rental shops can provide short-day options and instruction.
- Wildlife spotting along the beach or estuaries—harbor seals, bald eagles, and migratory birds are common.
- Exploring local history or the Yakutat Museum for a quick cultural stop.
If you have a morning at the end before your flight, consider a short coastal walk or a quick visit to the Situk River for wildlife viewing and photos. It’s a peaceful way to soak in the scenery without needing a full-day commitment.
Summary recommendation: Prioritize Hubbard Glacier for a dramatic experience (even if a shorter, more affordable option), then use any remaining time for light hiking along the coast or river, wildlife spotting, and photography. This balances your interest in nature, wildlife, and active exploration within the limited time.
