July Road Trip Itinerary
Hello TA, I've landed on our itinerary to travel US 1 from North to South. We have 10 days, including arrival and departure days. Coming from the East Coast.
We are active 60-year-olds who like good food, culture, history, some relaxation, and nature. Here's our plan:
Days 1-3: Stay in San Francisco (Muir Woods, Bike across GG Bridge, Alcatraz)
Days 4-5 Stay in Pacific Grove (Monterey Aquarium, 17-mile drive, Carmel, short hikes)
Days 6-7 Stay in Morro Bay (Hearst Castle, Wineries)
Days 8-9 Stay in Santa Barbara (Mission, Beach)
Day 10: fly home
I need to flesh out more details about what we will do in each location. Does this framework work? Would you suggest moving one location less often? I welcome all other suggestions. Thanks.
Your proposed 10-day itinerary along US 1 from San Francisco to Santa Barbara is quite doable and well-paced for active travelers who enjoy a mix of culture, nature, and relaxation. Given your interests and the summer timing, here’s a more detailed suggestion for each segment along with tips for adjusting stops and timing.
Days 1-3: San Francisco
San Francisco has a lot to offer, and your 3-night stay is appropriate. You can mix iconic attractions with some less crowded neighborhoods and light nature experiences.
- Day 1: Arrive, settle into your hotel. Consider a walk through Fisherman’s Wharf, Pier 39, and maybe an evening view from Coit Tower or the Embarcadero.
- Day 2: Morning bike across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito, return via ferry. Afternoon visit to Muir Woods for towering redwoods. Evening in North Beach for Italian dinner.
- Day 3: Morning visit to Alcatraz Island (book tickets in advance). Afternoon exploring neighborhoods like Chinatown, Mission District murals, or Golden Gate Park. Optional evening cable car ride or sunset at Twin Peaks.
Days 4-5: Pacific Grove / Monterey
Your 2 nights here is sufficient to explore the Monterey Peninsula at a relaxed pace.
- Day 4: Check into your hotel. Visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannery Row. Evening stroll along the coastline or dine at a seafood restaurant in Monterey or Pacific Grove.
- Day 5: Drive the 17-Mile Drive (stop at iconic points like Pebble Beach, Lone Cypress). Explore Carmel-by-the-Sea’s shops and galleries. Optional short hikes at Point Lobos State Natural Reserve.
Days 6-7: Morro Bay / San Luis Obispo Coast
This stretch is great for wineries, coastal scenery, and historic sites.
- Day 6: Drive to Morro Bay, stopping along the scenic Pacific Coast Highway. Explore the town, Morro Rock, and local shops. Sunset at the bay is lovely.
- Day 7: Morning visit to Hearst Castle. Afternoon winery visits in Paso Robles (nearby). Consider a short hike in Montana de Oro State Park or a beach walk.
Days 8-9: Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara is perfect for relaxing after the drive. Two nights works well for soaking in the coastal charm.
- Day 8: Explore Santa Barbara Mission, Old Town, State Street shopping and dining. Walk along Stearns Wharf. Evening at the beach.
- Day 9: Optional morning hike in the Santa Ynez foothills or visit nearby wineries. Afternoon at the beach or visit the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. Evening dinner with ocean view.
Day 10: Departure
Depending on your flight time, a morning stroll along the beach or a quick visit to Funk Zone galleries and cafes before heading to the airport is feasible.
Additional tips and suggestions:
- Your framework is solid; reducing stops may help you enjoy each location more deeply. For instance, combining Morro Bay and Paso Robles wineries in one base (stay in Paso Robles) can reduce driving time.
- Book popular attractions (Alcatraz, Hearst Castle, Monterey Aquarium) in advance for summer.
- Be flexible with timing for scenic stops along US 1, as traffic and parking can affect pace.
- Consider starting early for scenic drives to maximize daylight and avoid crowds.
Overall, your itinerary balances active exploration, scenic drives, and downtime well. Adjusting one night in either Monterey or Morro Bay depending on your pace can make the trip even more relaxed.
