Snorkeling

I need some recommendation for snorkeling.

1. I’m planning to go to either Napili or Airport beach for snorkeling. Which beach is better for snorkeling?

2. I went to Ahihi-Kinau Natural Area Reserve about 20 years ago. Only thing I remember is water was clear and shallow. Is this a still good place to go for snorkeling?

Maui offers some excellent snorkeling spots, each with its own characteristics. Here’s a comparison of Napili Bay and Airport Beach, as well as an update on Ahihi-Kinau Natural Area Reserve:

Napili Bay vs. Airport Beach

  • Napili Bay:
    • Water clarity: Generally very clear, especially in the morning before wind picks up.
    • Marine life: Good variety of fish, occasional turtles, and coral formations along the edges of the bay.
    • Conditions: Calm waters, protected cove, safe for beginners, and great for families.
    • Overall: Excellent snorkeling, easier access, and a picturesque beach with facilities nearby.
  • Airport Beach (Kanaha Beach Park):
    • Water clarity: Can be less clear depending on wind and tides; better on calm days.
    • Marine life: Decent, but not as abundant or diverse as Napili; mainly fish and occasional rays.
    • Conditions: Less protected, more wind-exposed, can have stronger currents.
    • Overall: Good if you are already nearby, but not as ideal as Napili for snorkeling.

In summary, for your purposes, Napili Bay is generally considered the better snorkeling beach due to calm waters, clear visibility, and richer marine life.

Ahihi-Kinau Natural Area Reserve

  • Water clarity: Still excellent in many areas, though visibility can vary depending on recent rainfall or surf.
  • Marine life: Very diverse, with healthy coral reefs, tropical fish, and occasional turtles. Certain sections are excellent for seeing lava formations underwater.
  • Conditions: Can be rougher with strong surf on some days; recommended for more experienced snorkelers. Safety and tide awareness are important.
  • Overall: Remains one of Maui’s top snorkeling destinations, especially for those seeking a more natural, preserved environment. Many visitors continue to rave about the underwater scenery.

Tips:

  • Go early in the morning for calmer water and the best visibility.
  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen and respect protected areas; some parts of Ahihi-Kinau are strictly protected for marine conservation.
  • Snorkel vests or flotation devices can make the experience safer and more comfortable, especially in areas with currents.

In conclusion, for easy, accessible snorkeling with a beautiful beach, Napili Bay is the better choice. For a more adventurous, natural experience with richer coral and marine life, Ahihi-Kinau Reserve remains excellent if conditions are suitable.
