Sunscreen question
I know I should use reef-safe sunscreen in Hawaii, but what about make-up that has SPF in it? Both my moisturizer and foundation contain SPF so I didn’t know if I can continue to use that or if I should buy a brand that doesn’t have it for the trip. Thanks.
In Hawaii, the focus on reef-safe products is due to the impact that certain chemicals, like oxybenzone and octinoxate, can have on coral reefs and marine life. When it comes to make-up with SPF, the key consideration is whether the sunscreen ingredients in your products are reef-safe.
Here’s what you need to know:
- If your moisturizer or foundation contains reef-safe SPF ingredients such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide (non-nano), it is generally considered safe to continue using them while in the ocean or on the beach.
- If your make-up contains chemical UV filters like oxybenzone, octinoxate, homosalate, or avobenzone, it’s better to avoid using it in situations where it could wash off into the water.
- Even with reef-safe SPF in make-up, the coverage is usually light and may not provide enough sun protection on its own, especially if you’re swimming or sweating. Consider applying a layer of reef-safe sunscreen underneath or on top of your make-up for full coverage.
- Waterproof and sweat-resistant reef-safe sunscreens are ideal for outdoor activities and beach time. Look for products labeled “broad-spectrum” and SPF 30 or higher.
Summary recommendations:
- Check the ingredient list for reef-safe mineral UV filters (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide).
- Use additional reef-safe sunscreen for adequate protection, even if your make-up has SPF.
- Avoid chemical SPF make-up that can wash off in the water.
- Reapply sunscreen every two hours, and after swimming or heavy sweating, regardless of make-up.
In short, you don’t necessarily need to replace your SPF make-up if it contains mineral, reef-safe ingredients, but be sure to supplement with adequate sunscreen for effective protection and environmental responsibility.
