Tolls

I will be renting a car at PHX airport and traveling through Sedona, page, monument valley and grand canyon. Do I need to rent any toll device?

If you are renting a car at Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX) and traveling through Sedona, Page, Monument Valley, and the Grand Canyon, you generally do not need to worry about tolls for this route. Most highways and roads in northern and central Arizona, including those leading to these destinations, are free to drive and do not have toll booths.

Here are some details:

  • Interstate 17 and 40: These are the main highways you will likely use between Phoenix, Flagstaff, and points north. Both are free highways with no tolls.
  • State Routes: Roads such as AZ-89A (Sedona), US-89 (Page), and US-160 (Monument Valley) are all free roads with no tolls.
  • City roads: You may encounter some toll roads in the Phoenix metro area, particularly in the east and north valley areas, but they are not on the route to these destinations. If you are sticking to the main highways out of the city, you can avoid tolls entirely.

Regarding rental cars and toll devices:

  • You do not need to rent a toll pass device for this specific trip unless you plan to use toll roads within the Phoenix metro area.
  • Rental car companies often offer a toll pass or transponder for convenience, but it is optional and comes with extra fees. For your northern Arizona itinerary, it is unnecessary.
  • If you do plan to explore toll roads in Phoenix, check the rental agreement for daily rates and decide if it is worth it.

In summary, for a trip covering Sedona, Page, Monument Valley, and the Grand Canyon, you can drive freely without worrying about tolls. Just be aware of optional toll roads if you briefly drive around Phoenix.
