August Opera Weekend

Thinking about attending a matinee performance by the West Edge Opera in August, which performs at the Oakland Scottish Rite Center.

Have a canceleable reservation at Soma House hotel.

Google maps says it is an easy trip on the Bart. But shows a 16 minute walk from the station in Oakland to the performance hall. Is this a safe area to walk alone?

Thanks.

The Oakland Scottish Rite Center is located in the Uptown district of Oakland, which has been revitalized over recent years with theaters, restaurants, and galleries. That said, like many urban areas, safety can vary depending on the exact streets and the time of day.

For walking from the MacArthur BART station (or other nearby stations) to the Scottish Rite Center, a 16-minute walk is reasonable, but there are a few considerations:

  • The route passes through mixed-use urban streets, some of which are quieter and can feel deserted, especially in the late afternoon or evening.
  • Uptown has seen development and street activity, but it is not the same as a tourist-heavy area like downtown San Francisco; therefore, caution is advised when walking alone.
  • Daytime walks are generally safe, but it’s best to avoid poorly lit side streets or alleyways, especially if you’re carrying valuables or alone.

Alternatives to walking alone include:

  • Rideshare services (Uber/Lyft) for the short trip from the BART station to the venue — typically quick and inexpensive.
  • Taxi service from the BART station.
  • If you’re comfortable, walking in a group or with other attendees can also increase safety and make the walk more pleasant.

In summary, the area is not particularly dangerous during the day, but as with any city, exercising standard urban safety precautions — staying on main streets, avoiding distractions, and using rideshare for short trips if unsure — is recommended.
