Last minute ideas for early Sunday afternoon?

We are visiting our son this weekend but because of a school commitment, we will have a few hours without him early Sunday afternoon. We do have a rental car. Any suggestions for somewhere to go for a few hours that would not involve being stuck in traffic much or put us too far from the USC campus? Somewhere we could find parking, walk around a bit, maybe stop at a cafe, & just easy sightseeing?

We’ll drop him off around 10:30 & will plan to pick him up again for a later lunch, after 2 pm. I don’t anticipate our being able to get into our hotel this early. Thanks for any suggestions!

Since you have just a few hours in early Sunday afternoon and want to stay relatively close to USC, you can focus on nearby neighborhoods with walkable areas, easy parking, and casual sightseeing. Here are some suggestions that are convenient and low-stress for a short visit:

  • Exposition Park & California Science Center: Right next to USC, Exposition Park has wide sidewalks, gardens, and free or inexpensive parking. You can walk around the rose garden, check out the grounds, or pop into the California Science Center if you want a quick museum experience (the Space Shuttle Endeavour exhibit is popular).
  • Downtown LA - Arts District or Little Tokyo: About 10-15 minutes from USC, you can park in a garage or metered spots and walk around. The Arts District has colorful murals, small galleries, and cafes. Little Tokyo offers shops, dessert spots, and a peaceful walking environment.
  • University Village / Exposition Blvd Cafes: Close to campus, there are a few small cafes and boutique shops where you can grab coffee and stroll around without venturing far into heavy traffic.

Other convenient short options include:

  • Natural History Museum of LA County: Adjacent to Exposition Park, great if you enjoy walking through exhibits or gardens for an hour or two.
  • Farmers Market / The Grove: About a 15-20 minute drive depending on traffic. You can park in their garages and stroll, grab a snack, and enjoy the casual ambiance. It’s a bit busier but offers a nice pedestrian-friendly experience.
  • Echo Park or MacArthur Park: Both have small lakes, walking paths, and nearby cafes. Parking is easier on Sundays in the morning/early afternoon.

Tips for a smooth few hours:

  • Plan for metered or garage parking to avoid stress; Sundays are often easier for street parking near USC.
  • Stick to a small radius (within 5-15 minutes drive from USC) to avoid getting caught in LA traffic.
  • Consider bringing a small backpack for any purchases or water, especially if walking through parks or outdoor areas.

Overall, Exposition Park and its surrounding areas are probably your safest bet for a relaxed, walkable few hours with options for coffee, light sightseeing, and minimal traffic hassle.
