LA fires- Still worth visiting

Hi,

After the recent fires in LA are areas such as Malibu and Santa Monica still worth visiting?

I'm planning to visit LA in May and just putting a rough itinerary together before booking.

Thank you

Los Angeles has experienced several wildfires in recent years, but by May, most areas including Malibu and Santa Monica are typically accessible and safe for visitors. While fires can temporarily affect air quality and access to certain trails or parks, the city works quickly to reopen key tourist destinations.

Specific considerations for Malibu and Santa Monica:

  • Malibu: Some hiking trails and backcountry areas may still be recovering, but the beaches and main coastal roads are usually open. Coastal areas like Zuma Beach, Malibu Pier, and Point Dume typically remain unaffected and are worth visiting.
  • Santa Monica: The city itself is urban and unaffected by fires directly, so attractions like the Santa Monica Pier, Third Street Promenade, and nearby beaches are fully operational and enjoyable.
  • Air quality: Check local air quality reports closer to your visit. Fires can temporarily affect visibility and health conditions, particularly in more inland or hilly areas.

Alternative activities if you are concerned about fire-affected areas:

  • Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and Downtown LA sightseeing
  • Griffith Park and Griffith Observatory – trails and urban viewpoints often unaffected
  • Venice Beach and Marina del Rey for a relaxed coastal experience
  • Museum visits, such as LACMA or The Getty, for indoor options

Overall, Malibu and Santa Monica remain popular and enjoyable destinations. By May, the majority of tourist infrastructure should be fully operational, and you can safely include these areas in your itinerary, keeping an eye on local conditions for outdoor activities.
