Luxor - not exactly a trip report

If you've been following my posts closely (but why), you know Mrs. T and I stayed at Luxor for 5 nights last week. Here are a few observations.

There have been comments to the effect that Luxor has gone downhill. Perhaps, but definitely not enough to trouble us. The rooms are somewhat tired by Vegas standards but no real problems. Bed was fine, except there was no security lock on the door.

You may remember we got a good deal on a suite. We never spend a lot of time in the room in Vegas, so we never even went into the living room, never watched TV, and never used the tub. Still, we have no regrets about getting the suite, if for no other reason than to say we did.

Best luck gambling in a long time. We enjoy watching March Madness and I enjoyed betting even more. I won four of my five bets so was way ahead there, and I finished ahead at craps. Slots were not so lucky but we still had one of our best visits so far as gambling is concerned, although that's not saying much. ;)

Luxor sports book is perhaps my least favorite places to sit and watch a game, but MB is one of the best and that's where we watched the men's final. More on that in another post.

I did want to get to a rooftop bar. You know I was researching and thought Beer Park would work for us,but our friends like asking cab drivers and ours took us to Ellis Island and that's where we ate that night. Our first night there Mrs. Touring and I walked to Skyfall to find out it was closed for a private event. Our last night, with our friends, I pretty much insisted we go to Skyfall and everyone loved it. Just as I was told here, no cover, not crowded, million dollar views.

Finally, more about Luxor. It is still a rumor but I heard they will be tearing it down. It would be more expensive to upgrade it than to rebuild. If true, I bet it's the elevators that would be too costly to upgrade, but that's basically just a guess.

Overall, we enjoyed it a lot. I really appreciate the lobby with its Egyptian style art and decor.

It sounds like you had a great experience at the Luxor, despite some of the more mixed reviews you've heard about the property. Let’s break down your thoughts and observations, as they provide valuable insight into the Luxor's current state.

Room Experience: It's interesting to hear that you found the rooms "somewhat tired" but still comfortable overall. As many guests have mentioned, some of the rooms at Luxor can feel a bit dated, especially compared to newer hotels on the Strip. The lack of a security lock on your door is a bit concerning, though it doesn’t seem to have been a major issue for you. Despite that, it seems like you made the most of your time in Vegas, spending little time in the room itself.

Suite Experience: It's nice that you enjoyed the suite, even if you didn't use all the amenities. It's not uncommon for people to book a suite just to experience the space without fully utilizing it. The idea of “just doing it because we can” is part of the Vegas experience—sometimes it's more about having that unique Vegas moment.

Gambling: It’s great to hear that you had a fantastic time gambling, especially with your success on March Madness betting and craps. It’s always a win when you can walk away ahead, even if the slots weren’t as kind this time. Vegas is all about the experience, and it seems like you enjoyed it to the fullest. The Luxor's casino may not have been your top choice for watching games, but it's good that you found a better spot at Mandalay Bay (MB).

Sportsbook Experience: You mentioned that Luxor's sportsbook is your least favorite place to watch a game, which is something many other visitors have said as well. While it's a fine place to place bets, it's not necessarily the most comfortable or enjoyable for game viewing. Mandalay Bay's sportsbook, on the other hand, is known to be one of the best, and it’s great that you were able to catch the men’s final there.

Rooftop Bars: It sounds like you had a bit of an adventure trying to get to a rooftop bar. It's unfortunate that Skyfall was closed for a private event on your first visit, but it's awesome that you ended up enjoying it on your last night. The million-dollar views, no cover charge, and relatively uncrowded space make it one of the more underrated spots in Vegas. Your friends must have been thrilled with the choice once you all got there!

Luxor’s Future: The rumor about Luxor potentially being torn down is definitely intriguing. There have been whispers for years about the property's future, especially with the ongoing renovation and upgrade of neighboring properties. It does make sense that upgrading the current structure, particularly the iconic but aging elevators, could be a costly venture. If true, it would be interesting to see what kind of redevelopment would take place in that space, as the Luxor's unique design and location are key assets. However, until an official announcement is made, it remains speculation.

Final Thoughts: Despite some of the less-than-ideal aspects like the room’s age and the rumors about the hotel’s future, it sounds like you had a memorable stay. The Egyptian-style art and decor in the lobby seem to have made a strong impression on you, and it's a feature that still sets the Luxor apart from other resorts on the Strip. Overall, it seems like Luxor offers a solid Vegas experience with a few quirks, and it sounds like you got exactly what you were hoping for.

Summary of Key Points:

  • Luxor rooms can feel a bit outdated but still offer a comfortable experience.
  • The suite was enjoyable, even if you didn’t use all of the amenities.
  • Successful gambling, especially on March Madness and craps, contributed to an overall fun trip.
  • Luxor’s sportsbook may not be ideal for watching games, but Mandalay Bay is a better alternative.
  • Skyfall is a great rooftop bar with stunning views, though it can be closed for private events at times.
  • Rumors about Luxor’s potential demolition have circulated due to the cost of upgrades, particularly the elevators.

Thanks for sharing your detailed observations! It's always great to hear from someone who has experienced the property firsthand, and your feedback offers a helpful perspective for anyone considering a stay at Luxor in the future.
