Updates to Checked Baggage Policy

We will offer two free checked bags to Rapid Rewards® A-List Preferred Members and Customers traveling on Business Select fares. We will also offer one free checked bag to A-List Members and other select Customers. In addition, Southwest will credit one checked bag for Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmembers. All remaining Customers will pay to check their first and second bags, and we will continue to charge for the third and fourth checked bags. Changes will apply to flights booked on or after May 28.

Southwest Airlines has announced an update to its checked baggage policy, which will take effect for flights booked on or after May 28. Here are the key details of the changes:

  • Two Free Checked Bags: Rapid Rewards® A-List Preferred Members and Customers traveling on Business Select fares will be entitled to check two bags for free.
  • One Free Checked Bag: A-List Members and other select Customers will be allowed one free checked bag.
  • Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmembers: Customers with a Rapid Rewards Credit Card will receive one free checked bag, in addition to any other benefits based on their status.
  • Charges for First and Second Bags: For customers who do not fall into the above categories, Southwest will charge for the first and second checked bags. The pricing will remain the same as in previous policies.
  • Charges for Third and Fourth Bags: As before, Southwest will continue to charge for the third and fourth checked bags, with standard fees for additional luggage.

These changes reflect Southwest's ongoing commitment to offering benefits to its loyal customers, particularly those with higher status in the Rapid Rewards program or those who purchase premium fares. If you're planning to travel with checked luggage, be sure to check your status or membership benefits to see what applies to your booking.

These updates will help streamline baggage handling for frequent travelers and reward those who are more engaged with Southwest’s services, but for others, it’s important to note the new charges for checked bags beyond the standard allowances.
