Public Transit Day-Trips From Aspen
Hey all, I'm currently pondering going to Aspen for 4-5 days in mid-June; It'll be my first time in Colorado. So far, I'm thinking 2 days will be for arrival/departure (Aspen airport) & 1 will be for the Maroon Bells. Since I'll have 1-2 days more, I was wondering if it's possible to take public transit to do a reasonable day-trip somewhere from Aspen? I do not drive.
Thank you.
Aspen has a surprisingly good public transit system for a small mountain town, and mid-June is a great time to explore the area without a car. While many visitors rent a car for day trips, you can still access several destinations using public buses or shuttles operated by the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority (RFTA).
Public Transit Options for Day Trips from Aspen:
- Snowmass Village: The RFTA bus system runs frequent routes from Aspen to Snowmass Village. The trip is short (about 15–20 minutes) and offers easy access to hiking trails, mountain biking, and scenic areas. Summer gondola rides are also available for panoramic views.
- Basalt and Carbondale: The RFTA buses extend down the Roaring Fork Valley to Basalt and Carbondale. These towns are charming small communities with riverside parks and easy walking areas. Carbondale has local cafes, galleries, and the Roaring Fork River for a mellow riverside experience.
- Maroon Bells Shuttle: Since you plan one day for Maroon Bells, note that RFTA runs shuttles from Aspen Highlands or the Aspen Visitor Center directly to the Maroon Bells Scenic Area. Advance reservations may be required mid-June, as this is peak season.
- Rifle Gap / Basalt Reservoirs: Some of the farther reservoirs and recreation areas may be reached by connecting buses with a transfer in Basalt. These are great for easy paddle boating, picnic spots, and short riverside walks.
Tips for Using Public Transit for Day Trips:
- Check the RFTA website or mobile app for schedules and real-time updates. Buses run frequently in June, but some routes to farther towns may be limited on weekends.
- Most buses are free within Aspen city limits, but longer trips to Snowmass, Basalt, or Carbondale require a fare. Purchase passes at the bus or in advance online.
- Plan your timing carefully: longer day trips (e.g., Aspen to Carbondale and back) may take a few hours each way, so start early to maximize your exploration time.
- Bring snacks and water, especially if you plan to hike or explore trails along the route.
In summary, even without a car, you can enjoy easy day trips to Snowmass Village, Basalt, and Carbondale using public transit, and of course, the Maroon Bells shuttle system covers your must-see natural highlight. These trips allow you to experience the valley’s natural beauty, small-town charm, and outdoor activities while relying entirely on RFTA buses and shuttles.
