Mineral Belt Trail

We're (50+) doing a road trip through CO in late August/September and considering a day trip to Leadville. We're probably staying in Buena Vista; with Leadville being only 40 minutes away, I am thinking of a day trip to ride the Mineral Belt Trail. Something about it sounds interesting to see the mining history along the way.

Two main concerns - terrain and elevation. Is the Mineral Belt Trail hilly? With regards to elevation, we will have been in CO for a week - 4 nights in Ft Collins and 4 nights in Aspen. Does that give most people time to adjust to Leadville's elevation?

What are other common things to do as a day trip, either in Leadville or on the drive between BV and Leadville?

The Mineral Belt Trail in Leadville is an excellent choice for a day trip, especially for visitors interested in Colorado's mining history and scenic mountain views. The trail is a 11.6-mile loop that circles Leadville and passes historic mining sites, old industrial ruins, and offers interpretive signs explaining the town's rich past.

Terrain and Elevation:

  • The trail is mostly paved and relatively flat, with only gentle inclines, making it suitable for walkers, cyclists, or casual riders in your 50s. It is not considered hilly, so the ride should be comfortable for most people.
  • Leadville sits at 10,152 feet, which is higher than both Buena Vista (around 7,965 feet) and Aspen (8,000–8,200 feet). Spending several nights in Aspen and Buena Vista will help your body acclimate, but take it easy on the first part of your ride and make sure to stay hydrated. Many visitors do fine with a slow pace, but be aware that some mild shortness of breath can occur until fully adjusted.

Additional Things to Do in Leadville:

  • Tennessee Pass/Mayflower Gold Mill: Learn about historical mining processes and see old equipment.
  • National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum: Offers exhibits and artifacts related to Colorado mining history.
  • Leadville Historic District: Walk through downtown to see Victorian architecture and local shops.
  • Lake County Courthouse and Boot Hill Cemetery: Interesting historical stops for visitors interested in local heritage.
  • Scenic Drives: On the way back to Buena Vista, consider driving over Fremont Pass or taking the back roads for mountain views and aspen groves.

Tips for a Comfortable Visit:

  • Start your ride in the morning when temperatures are cooler, and traffic is lighter.
  • Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and layered clothing, as mountain weather can change quickly.
  • Carry water and snacks, especially if you plan to walk or ride the full loop.
  • If cycling, e-bikes or renting bikes in Leadville can make the trail easier for those concerned about the altitude.

Overall, the Mineral Belt Trail is a scenic, historically interesting, and accessible activity that fits well into a day trip from Buena Vista. Combining the ride with a short exploration of Leadville’s downtown or museums will make for a rewarding outing without requiring strenuous hiking or extreme physical exertion.
