Nervous about the weather ( Fall and Spring )

Hi there. I am planning a trip to Guizhou and Shanxi. The 2 periods I can travel is early November and first week of March. I am torn between going to Guizhou in November and then Shanxi in March or vice versa. I would appreciate if anyone can provide me with some suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Hi! Choosing the best travel period for Guizhou and Shanxi depends on weather, scenery, and your tolerance for cold or wet conditions. Here’s a detailed breakdown for both options.

Option 1: Guizhou in November, Shanxi in March

  • Guizhou in November: November is generally cool and dry in Guizhou. Average temperatures range from 10–18°C (50–64°F). Rainfall decreases compared to summer, so hiking, visiting rice terraces, and exploring minority villages is comfortable. Autumn colors can be seen in some areas, though less dramatic than in northern China.
  • Shanxi in March: Shanxi is still quite chilly in early March, with temperatures around 0–12°C (32–54°F). Snow may linger in northern parts, especially around Mount Wutai. Some attractions may be less crowded, but mornings can be frosty and days can feel raw if windy.

Option 2: Shanxi in November, Guizhou in March

  • Shanxi in November: Late autumn in Shanxi is crisp and dry, with beautiful fall foliage in temples, old towns, and mountains like Pingyao and Mount Wutai. Temperatures range from 0–10°C (32–50°F), so layering is necessary. Days are shorter but generally sunny.
  • Guizhou in March: Early March is still cool (around 10–18°C / 50–64°F), but it is the start of the rainy season. There can be frequent drizzles and fog in valleys, which can make hiking and countryside sightseeing less comfortable. However, scenery is starting to green up after winter, so terraces and rivers look fresh.

Other considerations:

  • If your priority is avoiding rain and enjoying outdoor sightseeing comfortably, Guizhou in November is better than in March.
  • If you prefer milder weather for Shanxi and seeing fall foliage, visiting Shanxi in November is ideal.
  • March in Shanxi is good for fewer crowds and slightly lower accommodation costs, but it can feel cold and windy.

Recommendation: Based on weather comfort and sightseeing conditions, the generally preferred option would be Guizhou in November and Shanxi in March. November offers pleasant weather for Guizhou’s landscapes, while March allows you to see Shanxi’s historical sites with fewer tourists, though you should be prepared for chillier temperatures.
