Your planned Alaska road tour from May 18th is very thorough and covers most of the highlights along the southern and central routes. Given the late spring timing, here are some detailed recommendations and considerations to help optimize your itinerary:

1. Anchorage (1 night)

Your list of Anchorage activities is solid, but given just one night, prioritize a mix of sightseeing and easy outdoor activities to avoid feeling rushed:

  • Do the Knowles Coastal Trail walk and have breakfast at Snow City Café — great combination for a first morning in Anchorage.
  • If time allows, stop by the Anchorage Museum to get a cultural overview of Alaska.
  • Kincaid Park is great for wildlife spotting and short hikes if you prefer nature over museums.

2. Seward (2 nights)

Two nights in Seward is ideal. Prioritize the Kenai Fjords Cruise early in your stay so you can adjust plans if the weather is poor. Exit Glacier is manageable in 2 hours and perfect for a short hike:

  • Kenai Fjords Cruise — try to book morning departure to maximize daylight and calmer waters.
  • IdidaRide Sled Dog tour — weather dependent, but a fun addition if you want a unique Alaskan experience.
  • Tonsina Hike and dock walks are optional but good for flexibility.

3. Transit to Homer via Soldotna/Kenai

Plan for scenic stops and seafood meals. Allow at least 1–2 hours for lunch and photo stops along the way. Kenai Lake is a beautiful detour for photos.

4. Homer (2 nights)

Homer is fantastic for wildlife, fishing, and scenic tours. Consider:

  • Bear viewing — a flight-based tour may be faster than a boat tour, and you’ll likely see more in limited time.
  • Water Taxi to Seldovia or Halibut Cove — excellent if the group enjoys small boat trips and exploration.
  • Salmon fishing — book in advance if desired; May is early season for fishing but scenic views are still spectacular.

5. Girdwood (1–2 nights)

Girdwood is beautiful and less rushed with a single night; if you have time, two nights is better to enjoy hiking, tram rides, and wildlife stops:

  • Alyeska Tram — check weather; early morning or late afternoon provides best lighting for photos.
  • Portage Glacier Cruise and Wildlife Conservation Center — easy to combine on a single day.

6. Denali/Talkeetna (2–3 nights)

This is the most weather-dependent part of the trip. Your plan is sound, but consider:

  • Driving into Denali NP — roads may still be icy in May; check conditions before heading deep into the park.
  • Talkeetna flight-seeing tours — book early in the morning to reduce cloud cover interference.
  • Savage River Loop and East Fork Shuttle — these are good for short hikes and wildlife viewing without overexertion.
  • Consider 3 nights if your priority is Denali, giving flexibility for weather delays.

7. Anchorage (1 final night)

Return to Anchorage for your last night. This is a good time to do anything missed on the first night, or to enjoy a relaxed dinner before departure.

Additional Tips:

  • May weather in Alaska is unpredictable — pack layers and waterproof gear.
  • Book popular tours (Kenai Fjords, flightseeing, bear viewing) as early as possible.
  • Expect long daylight hours, especially in late May, which allows for flexibility in timing.
  • Always have alternative indoor options (museums, small town shops) in case of heavy rain.

Overall, your itinerary is well-balanced. The main adjustment to consider is possibly extending Girdwood or Denali to two nights each to accommodate weather delays and ensure full enjoyment of these highlights. The southern coastal leg is doable as planned with minimal stress.
