Hello everyone! Partner and I are headed for a last minute, very short visit to Anchorage next week, mid September. I’ve been looking things up, and am beginning to have a plan, so far:
- fly in on 09/14 in ANC, rest the night.
- 09/15: drive down for a short hike near Byron Glacier / Portage area in the morning. Looking for suggestions on easy hikes that get us close to a glacier / glacial lake! After this, I've been keen on going up to Talkeetna for a flightseeing tour of Ruth glacier and maybe check out the northern lights (although, I'm seeing weather might not be favorable next week for this date).
- Spend the evening in Talkeetna, and just relax (I see there are nice views of Denali from the park there). Rest the night there, and hope for some northern lights to show.
- 09/16: Drive back to ANC for a mid afternoon flight out.
A few questions:
- Is this too ambitious for a day and a half? I usually don't do this, but we're kind of stupidly excited for the first Alaskan trip lol, despite having such little time.
- I hear the traffic around Wasilla can get pretty bad, and am wondering if driving through Hatcher's Pass on the way up from Anchorage would save us time, and give some sights as well.
- For the routes mentioned above, do we need to worry about driving in snow/on ice this time of the year? (particularly the Hatcher's pass route?)
- What's the wildlife situation like around now? Don't really want to run into grizzlies when on a short hike either in the Hatcher's pass region, or around Portage valley (I was suggested Byron glacier as a doable short hike)
If all of this sounds too ambitious for the timeframe, any alternative suggestions? I don't mind driving long if the views are scenic, and we're looking at this trip as a relaxing taster than anything with strenuous hikes. We love glaciers, and would love to check the northern lights but I understand it's a long shot for just two nights. I started planning this trip around a possible flightseeing tour of Denali (something I’ve talked myself into thinking is worth splurging on a bit), and the potential for northern lights. Not particularly keen on Matanuska though, as I’ve heard mixed reviews of the operation and the owners, and it seems fairly commercialized. I understand seeing the Aurora further north would be better, but since we don’t have much time, I’m trying to be flexible and prioritize things we would already enjoy during the day.
First time in AK, hope to come back for much longer later! Hit me with any suggestions you may have.
Your plan is ambitious but definitely doable if you keep expectations realistic and prioritize the experiences you most want to have. Alaska in mid-September offers beautiful fall scenery, but daylight is shortening and weather can be unpredictable, so flexibility is key.

Overall, your plan is feasible for a taster visit. Prioritize glacier views and the flightseeing tour, and treat any additional sights as flexible bonuses. With only two nights, aim for quality, relaxed experiences rather than trying to squeeze in too many locations.
