Private or semi private guided tour

My wife and I want to travel to Alaska and visit Ketchikan, Denali and Katmai to see the bears. We have done a lot of traveling and prefer to travel either private or semi private. We are not interested in seeing things we've already seen such as dog sleds and ski resorts. What we want to see are animals and things that we won't see elsewhere. We would prefer not to do driving and we would prefer flying or private driving if possible, but understand trains are great also. Recommendation appreciated for help finding a guided tour or a guide. Not interested in seeing Fairbanks.

For a private or semi-private Alaska trip focused on wildlife, particularly bears, and avoiding typical tourist spots like dog sleds and ski resorts, a tailored itinerary can give you an immersive experience while minimizing driving and crowds. Since you are interested in Ketchikan, Denali, and Katmai, you can combine small plane travel, guided tours, and selective accommodations to maximize your wildlife encounters.

Suggested Approach:

Ketchikan:

  • Arrive via flight or ferry from Seattle. Ketchikan is known for its rich wildlife, salmon runs, and coastal scenery.
  • Consider a private charter boat tour or semi-private wildlife tour in the Misty Fjords National Monument. These tours offer kayaking, bear watching along the coastline, and opportunities to see eagles, seals, and other marine life.
  • Staying at a boutique lodge or small inn allows for personal service and customized day trips.

Denali Area:

  • Fly into or take the train to Denali National Park. For a private experience, consider chartered transport or a private guided tour inside the park.
  • Wildlife-focused activities include guided hikes, photography tours, and wildlife spotting for bears, moose, wolves, and caribou. Guides often know secret spots that are not accessible via standard park shuttles.
  • Consider staying in lodges slightly outside the main park to allow access to less trafficked trails.

Katmai National Park:

  • Katmai is remote, so most access is via floatplane from Anchorage or King Salmon. Opt for a private or semi-private bear viewing flight tour that lands near Brooks River or Redoubt Bay.
  • Private guided tours in Katmai maximize bear viewing while reducing crowd exposure, as standard tours can be crowded and regulated.
  • Book lodge accommodations in advance; smaller lodges provide intimate settings with guided excursions tailored to your interests.

General Recommendations:

  • Work with specialized Alaska tour operators that focus on private or semi-private wildlife tours. Some reputable companies include:
    • Alaska Private Journeys – custom itineraries with small group or private guides.
    • Rust’s Flying Service – for guided floatplane access to bear viewing areas.
    • Alaska Wilderness Adventures – private/semi-private wildlife and nature tours.
  • Plan at least 2-3 days per location for optimal wildlife viewing and flexibility with weather and animal activity.
  • Prioritize bear viewing in early summer when salmon runs are active (typically June to July) for the highest likelihood of seeing bears feeding.
  • Bring proper optics (binoculars, camera with zoom lens) and dress in layers; weather can change rapidly.
  • Consider hiring a private pilot or charter flights for moving between locations efficiently and minimizing travel time.

With this setup, you will avoid the crowded tourist experiences, focus on wildlife, and enjoy Alaska’s natural beauty in a private or semi-private setting.
