Where to stay in San Francisco

Hey,

I'm visiting San Francisco in a few weeks staying in Union Square at Hotel Zetta San Francisco.

I've heard about the homeless issue around the area. Should I keep the booking or look at another area?

Thank you

Staying at Hotel Zetta in Union Square is generally fine, but it’s true that the area has a visible homeless population, which can affect the overall feel of the streets, particularly in some parts closer to Powell Street or around the BART entrances. Most visitors still find it safe, especially during the day and in well-trafficked areas.

Considerations for Union Square:

  • The area is very central, making it convenient for shopping, restaurants, and public transit. Walking to popular attractions like Chinatown, the Cable Cars, and Moscone Center is easy.
  • Evenings can be quieter in some blocks, but there may be panhandling or people resting in doorways. It’s mostly non-violent, but some visitors may feel uncomfortable.
  • Hotel Zetta itself is modern, secure, and located on a busy block, which helps mitigate safety concerns.

Alternative areas to consider:

  • Fisherman’s Wharf: More tourist-focused, generally safer at night, but farther from Union Square restaurants and nightlife.
  • North Beach / Chinatown: Still central with lots of restaurants, a bit quieter at night, but less shopping convenience.
  • SoMa / Yerba Buena: Close to museums and the Moscone Center, more modern hotel options, though some parts can feel industrial or less pedestrian-friendly at night.

Recommendation:

If you like your current booking, it’s reasonable to keep it. Union Square is very convenient for first-time visitors and the hotel itself is secure. Just be aware of your surroundings, avoid poorly lit side streets at night, and you should have a pleasant stay. If you prefer a slightly quieter experience, Fisherman’s Wharf or North Beach can be considered, but you may sacrifice some centrality.
