Help for an Arizona Newbie
Hello all!
My husband and I are wanting to spend 3-4 weeks near Tucson next February. I have a couple of questions...
1. What areas of Tucson are the best to stay in or what areas should be avoided?
2. Should we look for a house with a pool or are temps too cool in February for swimming?
TIA!
Hi there!
Spending 3-4 weeks near Tucson in February is a wonderful idea—the weather is generally mild, the desert is beautiful, and it’s a great time to explore the area without the summer heat.
1. Best areas to stay in Tucson:
- Oro Valley and Catalina Foothills: These are upscale, safe, and scenic areas north of central Tucson. They offer beautiful desert landscapes, hiking trails, and good access to restaurants and shopping.
- Downtown Tucson: Great if you want a more urban vibe with cultural attractions, historic neighborhoods, and local dining. Walkable areas include the 4th Avenue and the University of Arizona vicinity.
- Sam Hughes / University Area: Residential, charming, and relatively safe. Close to shops, cafes, and the University of Arizona campus.
Areas to be cautious or avoid:
- Some parts of South Tucson can have higher crime rates; while not necessarily dangerous for short visits, it’s good to be aware if renting a house for an extended stay.
- Certain industrial areas or outskirts without amenities may not be ideal for a longer stay.
2. Pool considerations:
- February temperatures in Tucson average highs in the mid-60s to low 70s°F and lows in the 40s°F. Daytime sun can feel warm, but water in a pool will generally be too cool for comfortable swimming unless the pool is heated.
- If having a heated pool is an option and you really want to swim, it could be enjoyable. Otherwise, you might find yourself using the pool mostly for lounging or aesthetic value.
Other tips:
- Renting in Oro Valley or Catalina Foothills gives you access to hiking trails, golf courses, and scenic views.
- Consider proximity to grocery stores and restaurants, especially if staying 3-4 weeks.
- Pack layers—desert mornings and evenings can be chilly, even in February.
Overall, Tucson is very manageable for a longer stay, especially if you choose a safe and scenic neighborhood. A heated pool is optional, but not strictly necessary for enjoyment in February.
