Sunset Hike
We are going to be getting into Yosemite West around 5:00 p.m. on June 16th. We are wondering what the best sunset hike would be... going up to glacier point or driving into the valley to Artist Point or a different view point? Thanks for the help!
Arriving at Yosemite West around 5:00 p.m. on June 16 gives you a great opportunity to catch the sunset without feeling rushed. Since sunset in mid-June is around 8:15–8:30 p.m., you have a few hours to get to a viewpoint and enjoy the scenery. The choice depends on how much driving versus hiking you want to do.
Sunset viewpoint options:
- Glacier Point: This is the classic sunset spot in Yosemite. It offers sweeping views of Yosemite Valley, Half Dome, Vernal and Nevada Falls, and the High Sierra. From Yosemite West, it’s about a 1-hour drive without traffic. You can catch the sunset from the parking area, so no hike is required unless you want to extend to the short Glacier Point Trail for an even better perspective.
- Artist Point / Tunnel View: Tunnel View is closer, roughly a 30–40 minute drive from Yosemite West. It provides the iconic view of El Capitan, Half Dome, and Bridalveil Fall in one frame. The viewpoint is easily accessible by car, with parking and benches, making it ideal if you want minimal walking.
- Sentinel Dome: If you want a short hike with a panoramic sunset, Sentinel Dome is about 3–4 miles round trip from the trailhead. From Yosemite West, it’s about a 45–50 minute drive to the trailhead. The hike is moderately easy and gives 360-degree views, including Half Dome and the valley floor.
- Taft Point: Also offers dramatic views with cliff edges and fewer crowds than Glacier Point. The Taft Point trail is 2.2 miles round trip, moderately easy, and allows for a memorable sunset experience. Driving from Yosemite West to the trailhead takes about 50 minutes.
Recommended approach:
- If you prefer minimal walking and maximum panoramic views: Glacier Point is the best choice. Arrive early enough to secure parking and enjoy the view before sunset.
- If you want a closer, easily accessible option with iconic views: Tunnel View / Artist Point is perfect and requires little time.
- If you enjoy short hikes and want a more immersive experience: Sentinel Dome or Taft Point offer smaller crowds, fantastic sunset photography, and a short but rewarding walk.
Given your 5:00 p.m. arrival, driving to Glacier Point is doable and offers the classic Yosemite sunset experience. Tunnel View is an excellent alternative if you want a quicker stop or to avoid the drive time. Sentinel Dome or Taft Point are best if you’re up for a light hike and want a more intimate sunset setting.
