6 days 5 nights in Xiamen

Hi,

will be travelling to Xiamen for a 6 days 5 nights trip with my hubby. We enjoy sightseeing, visiting parks, nature hikes and food. I am now working on the itinerary.

Any suggestions or recommendations from the local will be much appreciated on things not to be missed and do.

Thank you.

Xiamen is one of China’s most charming coastal cities, known for its relaxed atmosphere, subtropical greenery, and mix of traditional and modern culture. With 6 days and 5 nights, you’ll have enough time to enjoy the city’s highlights as well as a day trip or two to nearby areas like Gulangyu Island or the Tulou villages. Below is a suggested itinerary and recommendations to help plan your trip.

Suggested Itinerary Overview:

  • Day 1: Arrival and evening stroll along Zhongshan Road
  • Day 2: Gulangyu Island (UNESCO World Heritage site)
  • Day 3: Nanputuo Temple and Xiamen University, followed by Hulishan Fortress
  • Day 4: Day trip to Fujian Tulou (Hakka earth buildings)
  • Day 5: Jimei School Village and scenic lakeside parks
  • Day 6: Morning hike at Huandao Road before departure

Detailed Recommendations:

Day 1: Arrival and Evening Exploration

After checking into your hotel, spend your evening at Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street, one of the liveliest areas in Xiamen. This is a great place for food lovers, with local snacks and traditional Fujianese dishes.

  • Try street foods such as oyster omelette, satay noodles (sha cha mian), and peanut soup.
  • Explore the colonial-style buildings and enjoy the local night vibe.

Day 2: Gulangyu Island (鼓浪屿)

Take the short ferry ride from Xiamen to Gulangyu, a peaceful island famous for its historical architecture, gardens, and music culture. No cars are allowed, making it perfect for leisurely walking and photography.

  • Visit Shuzhuang Garden and Piano Museum.
  • Walk up to Sunlight Rock (Riguangyan) for panoramic views of Xiamen city and coastline.
  • Try local seafood and explore the quaint alleys filled with cafes and souvenir shops.

Day 3: Temples, Fortresses, and Coastal Walks

Start your day at Nanputuo Temple, a famous Buddhist site at the foot of Wulao Mountain. After exploring the temple, walk through Xiamen University, often called one of the most beautiful campuses in China.

  • Climb the nearby Hulishan Fortress, known for its coastal defenses and scenic sea views.
  • Walk or cycle along Huandao Road (环岛路), a beautiful coastal road perfect for sightseeing.

Day 4: Fujian Tulou Day Trip

Dedicate a day to exploring the Fujian Tulou in Nanjing or Yongding County, about 2.5–3 hours by car from Xiamen. These circular Hakka earthen buildings are UNESCO World Heritage sites and provide a fascinating look at traditional rural life.

  • Join a guided tour or hire a private driver to visit Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster, Yuchang Building, and Taxia Village.
  • Enjoy authentic Hakka cuisine in the countryside before returning to Xiamen in the evening.

Day 5: Cultural Exploration and Relaxation

Spend your day exploring Jimei School Village, an educational district founded by philanthropist Tan Kah Kee. It’s known for its beautiful mix of Chinese and Western architectural styles.

  • Visit the Overseas Chinese Museum and Dragon Boat Pond.
  • Later, relax at Bailuzhou Park or enjoy a coffee near Yundang Lake.

Day 6: Morning Hike and Departure

Before leaving, consider a light hike or cycling route along the scenic coastal stretch of Huandao Road or the Xiangshan Scenic Area. It’s a peaceful way to end your trip and enjoy the sea breeze.

Other Recommended Foods to Try:

  • Seafood hotpot and fresh oysters
  • Sha cha noodles (satay flavor)
  • Popiah (spring rolls)
  • Fried five-spice rolls
  • Peanut soup dessert

Travel Tips:

  • The best seasons to visit are spring and autumn (March–May, September–November) when the weather is mild and pleasant.
  • Public transportation is reliable, but hiring a local driver for day trips (like Tulou) saves time.
  • Book Gulangyu ferry tickets in advance, especially during weekends or holidays.

Overall, six days in Xiamen gives you a comfortable balance of culture, nature, and relaxation. Mixing urban sightseeing, island charm, and a countryside day trip ensures you see the best of Fujian’s coastal beauty and heritage.
