3 nights in between Xiamen and Guangzhou?

I am spending 3 nights in Xiamen and then I have a 3 night gap. Then 5 nights in Guangzhou. This would be in March.

Looking for recommendations for somewhere interesting and quantifiably different to stay between these two cities?

I'm mostly interested in food, culture, walking through neighborhoods, and nature. I will be spending a full month in China so this is the first part of the trip.

I have Shenzhen booked now, but it seems pointless if I am already spending 8 nights in Hong Kong before all of this?

Any advice appreciated.

For a 3-night stop between Xiamen and Guangzhou, you want a city that offers distinct culture, good food, walkable neighborhoods, and some natural scenery. Since you already have Xiamen and Guangzhou booked, here are some interesting options that provide a different experience:

  • Fuzhou (Fujian Province): About 3–4 hours by high-speed train from Xiamen. Fuzhou has a charming old town area with traditional architecture, local Fujian cuisine, and riverside walks. The Three Lanes and Seven Alleys (Sanfang Qixiang) area is excellent for exploring historic neighborhoods. It also has nearby mountains and parks for short nature walks.
  • Chaozhou (Guangdong Province): Famous for its Teochew culture, architecture, and cuisine. A 2–3 hour train ride from Shantou (reachable from Xiamen), Chaozhou offers temples, old streets, and excellent food markets specializing in Teochew snacks. You can also take a short trip to the scenic Hanjiang River.
  • Meizhou (Guangdong Province): A cultural hub for Hakka people, about 5–6 hours by train from Xiamen. Known for Hakka architecture, hill villages, and local cuisine. It provides a quieter, more rural experience if you want to escape big city crowds.
  • Shantou (Guangdong Province): Coastal city with a blend of Cantonese and Chaoshan culture. Offers seafood, historic colonial streets, and local markets. It’s walkable and less touristy compared to Guangzhou or Shenzhen.

Tips:

  • Choose based on whether you prefer coastal cities (Fuzhou, Shantou) or inland cultural experiences (Chaozhou, Meizhou).
  • All these cities are well connected by high-speed rail, making 3-night stays convenient without wasting travel time.
  • For food and walking culture, Chaozhou is particularly unique due to its Teochew culinary traditions and old streets.
  • If you want a nature break, Fuzhou offers nearby mountains and river walks that are easy to combine with city exploration.

In summary, for a short stop between Xiamen and Guangzhou, Chaozhou or Fuzhou are excellent options for culture, food, and walkable neighborhoods, while Meizhou offers a quieter, rural Hakka experience.
