Subway after Sox and Cubs Games

Hi All,

I used to be in Chicago twice a year but haven't been back much since Covid. Planning a baseball trip in August to see Cubs and Sox games. At least one of the games will end after dark - 6:40pm game so anywhere from 9:40-10pm-ish end time.

Plan is to take the Red Line to/from our hotel. Hotel is TBD but looking at Hyatt Centric, Intercontinental, AC Hotel - so Mag Mile area.

My question is... after a game, are the trains safe? I'm assuming they'll be packed with baseball fans and totally fine, but wanted to check with you all to be sure.

Also, once off the train - if it's 10:30pm, what are you thoughts on safety walking from subway to hotel (5-10 walk in Mag Mile area from either Grand Station or Chicago Station.

Probably overthinking it, but would feel better getting some feedback. It will be husband and teen son.

Thank you!

It's great that you're planning a baseball trip in Chicago! The Red Line is a popular choice for getting to and from the Cubs and Sox games, especially from the Mag Mile area. Here are some insights on your questions regarding safety and convenience:

1. Are the trains safe after a game?

Generally speaking, the Red Line is safe to use after Cubs and Sox games. The trains are usually filled with other baseball fans, especially after evening games, so you'll be surrounded by crowds and people heading in the same direction. The CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) operates the Red Line late into the night, and it tends to be well-patrolled by security, especially around event times. However, as with any public transportation, it's always a good idea to stay alert, keep your belongings secure, and be mindful of your surroundings.

2. Safety walking from the subway to the hotel (around 10:30pm)?

In general, the area around the Magnificent Mile (where your hotels are located) is considered safe, even at night. It's a well-lit and busy area, especially with tourists and locals walking around. The distance from either Grand or Chicago Stations to hotels like the Hyatt Centric, Intercontinental, or AC Hotel is a short walk, and the streets are typically busy with people coming from the nearby shops, restaurants, and attractions.

That said, here are a few safety tips:

  • Stick to well-lit streets: The streets in the Mag Mile area are well-lit and busy, even late at night. Try to avoid alleys or less trafficked routes.
  • Walk with confidence: Even if the streets seem quieter at night, walking with a confident stride can help you avoid unwanted attention. Keep your phone out of sight to avoid being distracted.
  • Use crosswalks and avoid jaywalking: Chicago has a lot of traffic, and drivers tend to be more cautious at crosswalks. Stick to the pedestrian rules for added safety.
  • Stay in groups: As you’ll be with your husband and son, you’ll already have company. This makes your walk safer than if you were alone.

3. Is it a safe area overall for tourists?

Yes, the Magnificent Mile area is one of the safest in Chicago, especially in the evenings. It’s a major tourist destination, so there’s always activity and plenty of people around. Chicago does have neighborhoods that may not be as safe after dark, but the Mag Mile area is typically not a concern. If you feel uneasy about walking, you can always opt for a quick cab ride or use a rideshare service like Uber or Lyft to get back to your hotel.

Final thoughts: It’s understandable to have concerns, but overall, your plan to take the Red Line and walk back to your hotel in the Mag Mile area is safe. The area is busy and tourist-friendly, and many people will be out and about even late at night. As long as you stay aware of your surroundings, it should be a smooth and enjoyable trip.
