Local Artists/Artisans

Hello, we have heard there are an abundance of t-shirt shops and "made in China" type souvenirs, so would love help with our plan to seek out locally made goods, artists, artisans, craftsmen, etc. Please let us know if you know of any stores or studios in the Juneau area that might match what we're looking for. Thank you!

Juneau has a rich arts community, and while there are plenty of tourist shops selling mass-produced souvenirs, there are also a number of local galleries and artisan studios where you can find authentic Alaskan-made products.

Here are some options to explore for locally made goods and artisan work:

  • Juneau Arts & Humanities Council (JAHC) – A central organization supporting local artists. Their gallery space often showcases rotating exhibits and sells work by local painters, sculptors, and craftspeople.
  • Perseverance Theatre Gallery – Located at the theatre, featuring works by local artists including paintings, pottery, and jewelry.
  • Glacier T-Shirt & Gift Shop Local Section – While primarily a souvenir shop, they carry a selection of locally made items including carved pieces, jewelry, and art prints.
  • Alaskan Artist Co-op / Local Galleries Downtown – Downtown Juneau has several small galleries where you can meet artists and purchase handmade jewelry, carvings, and textiles directly from the source.
  • Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center Gift Shop – Offers locally made items such as wood carvings, native art, and handcrafted jewelry, giving you both scenic views and authentic shopping.
  • St. Ann's Arts & Crafts – Occasionally hosts local artisans and craft fairs featuring handmade Alaskan items.

Tips for finding authentic local pieces:

  • Ask if items are “Alaska-made” or signed by the artist, which indicates local craftsmanship.
  • Look for pieces made from local materials like Alaskan wood, jade, or sea glass.
  • Visit small galleries and co-ops rather than large chain souvenir shops for the most genuine finds.

Walking around downtown Juneau, particularly along South Franklin Street, is a great way to discover local studios and galleries. Many artists are happy to discuss their work and creative process, providing a richer experience than simply buying souvenirs.
