Another question about taxis to Mendenhall Glacier

We would like to bring my husband’s small, foldable, travel scooter to visit the Mendenhall glacier visitor center and whatever else we can manage to see in the glacier area. Although the scooter only weighs 50 pounds and folds to the size of a medium suitcase, I don’t think we will be allowed to bring it on either the blue buses or the white buses. However, the scooter would fit easily in the trunk of a taxi.

Unfortunately, there will be four other cruise ships in Juneau besides our’s on the day in July that we will be there. I have seen posts mentioning how difficult it is to get a taxi unless they are reserved ahead of time. It would be so much easier if the taxis were just lined up like they are in many other parts but I know that isn’t the case there.

Assuming we do reserve in advance, does anyone know how much it would cost to get to Mendenhall glacier from the port? It’s somewhat hard to figure out how much time we are likely to need to see the things we are able to

there before we would want to go back to Juneau. So that complicates things with regard to scheduling as well.

Some people have mentioned using Uber. Any explanation regarding how easy it would be ti get one, the cost, getting a return trip, etc., would be very helpful

as well.

Thanks for any helpful responses.

Visiting Mendenhall Glacier from the Juneau cruise port with a foldable travel scooter is very doable by taxi or rideshare, but planning ahead is essential, especially with multiple cruise ships in port at the same time.

Here are your main options and considerations:

  • Taxi: Juneau has a limited number of taxis, and they are often booked well in advance during cruise season. Since you have a foldable scooter that can fit in the trunk, a taxi is a convenient option. Reservations are strongly recommended rather than relying on taxis waiting at the port. You can contact local taxi companies ahead of time to schedule your trip.
  • Cost: The taxi fare from the cruise port to Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center is typically around $25–$30 one way. Allow for possible surge pricing or slight variations depending on traffic and the taxi company.
  • Return Trip: When reserving your taxi, you can either book a round-trip with a specific return time or ask the driver to wait while you explore. Waiting fees may apply, generally around $25–$35 per hour, depending on the company.

Regarding rideshares:

  • Uber/Lyft: Both services operate in Juneau, but availability can be limited during peak cruise ship days. You may need to wait longer for a car or pay surge pricing. Uber is convenient for one-way trips, but for a return trip, you may have uncertainty finding a ride exactly when you need it.
  • If you choose Uber, it’s a good idea to check the app frequently and schedule a pickup in advance if the feature is available. Alternatively, using a taxi with a set pickup ensures you won’t miss your ship’s departure time.

Time considerations:

  • The drive to Mendenhall Glacier from the cruise port takes about 25–30 minutes one way. Plan for at least 1.5–2 hours at the glacier if you want to visit the visitor center, walk some of the short trails, and take photos.
  • Including travel time, budgeting about 3–4 hours for the round trip is reasonable, which also gives some buffer in case of traffic or waiting for a taxi return.

In summary, reserving a taxi in advance is the most reliable option for bringing a foldable scooter and controlling your schedule. Uber is possible but less predictable during peak cruise days. Budget about $50–$60 for a round trip taxi and plan for roughly 3–4 hours for the entire excursion.
