Driving advice

Looking for driving advice on our Sequoia / KC day trip from Visalia on a weekday in early June.

Plans are to drive up to Giant Forest Museum early am and then use the park shuttles for various stops / trails thereabouts. Time and energy permitting, plan to continue driving to the Grant Tree.

Leaving the Grant Tree, Google Maps suggests taking Hwy 180 west to Hwy 63, then south to Visalia. I also noticed Hwy 245 running south to Visalia as an alternative.

Just curious if anyone has driven both and can comment?

Thanks!

For a day trip to Sequoia and Kings Canyon from Visalia, your driving route choices for the return trip can impact both your driving time and scenery experience. Here's a detailed look at your options:

1. Typical Day Trip Flow:

Arriving early at the Giant Forest Museum is a great plan to avoid crowds. Using the park shuttles allows you to explore nearby trails efficiently, including the Big Trees Trail, Moro Rock, and Tunnel Log if time permits. Continuing to the Grant Tree adds another iconic stop and is worthwhile if you still have energy.

2. Return Route Options:

  • Hwy 180 west → Hwy 63 south to Visalia: This is the route suggested by Google Maps. It tends to be faster on paper and uses more well-maintained highways. You’ll pass through the foothills with some views but it’s more of a straightforward drive.
  • Hwy 245 south to Visalia: This route is less direct and more winding, but it offers a more scenic drive through the Sierra Nevada foothills, including rolling hills, oak woodlands, and occasional small towns. The road is narrower and has more curves, so it may take longer, but the scenery is rewarding if you prefer a relaxed, picturesque drive.

3. Recommendations:

  • If your goal is to minimize driving time after a full day of hiking and shuttle use, Hwy 180 → 63 is more practical.
  • If you enjoy scenic drives and don’t mind taking a little extra time, Hwy 245 provides a charming alternative with fewer vehicles and more immersive views of the foothills.
  • Either route is safe and passable in early June. Both avoid snow, and road conditions are typically good at that time.

4. Additional Tips:

  • Fuel up in Visalia before entering the park, as options inside the park are limited.
  • Start early to maximize your day and avoid afternoon heat, especially if hiking near Giant Forest.
  • Keep a small snack and water in the car for the drive back, particularly if taking the more rural Hwy 245 route.

In summary, both routes are viable. Hwy 180 → 63 is quicker and easier, while Hwy 245 is more scenic and leisurely. Choose based on whether you prioritize efficiency or views after a day of exploring the park.
