One day trip to Sequoia

My husband and I are coming to Sequoia national Park and staying in three rivers for one night. We’ve never been, so we want to see the most that we can in one day what do you suggest? we don’t mind hiking…..five miles would probably be our limit. So please, let me know of the best things to see if you had just one day and one night.

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are incredible, and even with just one day, you can see some of the highlights. Staying in Three Rivers gives you easy access to the main areas of the park. Here’s a suggested itinerary for a full day that balances driving, sightseeing, and moderate hiking.

Morning: Giant Forest and General Sherman Tree

  • Start early from Three Rivers to the Giant Forest area. The drive takes about 45 minutes to an hour.
  • Visit the General Sherman Tree, the largest tree in the world. It’s a short walk from the parking lot (about 0.5 mile round trip) and easy for all skill levels.
  • Explore nearby Moro Rock. It’s a steep climb of 350 steps but offers panoramic views of the Sierra Nevada. If you prefer something gentler, you can skip this and focus on forest trails instead.

Late Morning to Early Afternoon: Moderate Hikes

  • Congress Trail: About 2 miles, mostly flat, loops past famous sequoias like the Senate and House trees. It’s a great way to experience the giant trees without overexertion.
  • Bring water and snacks, wear comfortable shoes, and enjoy the serene forest environment.

Lunch

  • Pack a picnic to eat in designated areas within the park, or return to Lodgepole Village or Giant Forest Village for a quick meal.

Afternoon: Crescent Meadow and Surrounding Trails

  • Drive to Crescent Meadow, known as the “Gem of the Sierra.”
  • Take the Loop Trail (about 1.5 miles) or a shorter stroll to see the abundant wildflowers (depending on the season) and possibly wildlife like deer or bears from a safe distance.
  • If you’re still feeling energetic, you can extend your walk to the nearby Tharp’s Log, a historic log cabin built into a fallen sequoia.

Late Afternoon: Optional Scenic Drive

  • Take a scenic drive along Wuksachi or Generals Highway back toward your exit. Stop at overlooks for sunset views.

Tips for Your One-Day Visit

  • Arrive early to avoid crowds, especially at General Sherman Tree and Moro Rock.
  • Bring layers; mornings can be cool, even in summer.
  • Carry water, snacks, and sunscreen.
  • Follow park rules: stay on trails, don’t climb on sequoias, and keep a safe distance from wildlife.
  • Use a park map to maximize time; prioritize highlights if hiking five miles total is your limit.

With this itinerary, you’ll see the most iconic parts of Sequoia National Park, enjoy moderate hikes, and experience the awe-inspiring giant sequoias without overdoing it in a single day.
