Family Road Trip

Hi All,

I am heading over from Australia with my family (Mrs and 2 boys 11 and 13). We want to see as much as we can without over doing it. We are all relatively fit and will be off doing medium rated hikes in the canyons/national parks.

Here is what I have so far for this section of the trip.

Day 1 Las Vegas to Grand Canyon via Route 66

Day 2 Grand Canyon

Day 3 Grand Canyon - Forrest Gump Point - Antelop Canyon - Bryce Canyon

Day 4 Bryce Canyon

Day 5 Bryce Canyon - Zion National Park

Day 6 Zion National Park

Day 7 Zion National Park to Las Vegas

Day 8 Las Vegas to Anaheim via Hoover Dam

I know Day 3 is a big day but ChatGPT tells me it is doable. I'd like the opinion of real people though just to confirm.

Regards

Jamie

Hi Jamie,

Your road trip plan through the Grand Canyon, Antelope Canyon, Bryce Canyon, and Zion National Park is ambitious but feasible with careful planning. Since you’re traveling with two active kids, the medium-rated hikes should be manageable, but it’s important to account for driving distances, stops, and time to explore each park.

Day 3 Considerations (Grand Canyon → Forrest Gump Point → Antelope Canyon → Bryce Canyon)

This is indeed a very long day, and while technically doable, it will be tight. Here are the main points to keep in mind:

  • Driving Distances: From the Grand Canyon South Rim to Forrest Gump Point (near Monument Valley) is roughly 3–3.5 hours. Antelope Canyon is about 2–2.5 hours from Monument Valley. Then from Antelope Canyon to Bryce Canyon is another 2.5–3 hours. In total, you’re looking at 7–8 hours of driving without factoring in stops.
  • Timing: Antelope Canyon tours are timed and often require reservations. Make sure to book your tour in advance and check the schedule. Morning tours are popular and can fill quickly.
  • Fatigue Factor: With kids, multiple hikes and long driving can become exhausting. Plan shorter stops for meals and rest to keep everyone energized.
  • Alternative: Some families split this into two days: one day for Grand Canyon and Monument Valley, and the next for Antelope Canyon and Bryce Canyon. This reduces driving stress and allows more time for hiking and exploration.

General Tips for the Trip:

  • Start early each day to maximize daylight and avoid the busiest times at trailheads.
  • Check each park’s shuttle schedules and parking options, especially for Grand Canyon and Zion, as these can save time and reduce walking.
  • Carry plenty of water, snacks, sun protection, and layers as temperatures vary between parks and elevations.
  • Use apps or GPS to track drive times, and have a backup plan in case of delays or longer stops.

Overall, your itinerary is possible, but Day 3 is the most intense and could be stressful if not carefully timed. If your family is okay with a long day on the road, it’s doable; otherwise, splitting it over two days is a more relaxed and enjoyable approach.

Safe travels and enjoy the incredible scenery!
