December Itinerary + Recomendations

I am headed to Arizona for a wedding in mid December and I'm tacking on two days for the Grand Canyon! I know full well this isn't enough to see everything but I live on the East Coast and never make it out to this area! First, I'd love advice on where to stay (El Tovar vs Bright Angel Lodge). I have read El Tovar decorates for the holidays and I do love the sound of that. Is it worth the extra money vs Bright Angel Lodge?

Then, what activities would you recommend in December? We will not be able to bring super intense hiking gear like spikes or clamps with our wedding attire but would love to do some tamer walks/hikes/lookouts/experiences.

Thank you in advance for your recommendations!

For a short December visit to the Grand Canyon, your lodging choice can really shape your experience. El Tovar and Bright Angel Lodge are both excellent historic options right on the South Rim, but they offer slightly different vibes and conveniences.

Lodging Recommendations:

  • El Tovar: Known for its elegant historic charm and festive holiday decorations, El Tovar provides a classic Grand Canyon experience. Rooms are more upscale, and the restaurant is highly regarded. If the atmosphere and décor matter to you and the higher price fits your budget, it’s worth it—especially if you enjoy a more refined stay with holiday ambiance.
  • Bright Angel Lodge: Offers a cozier, rustic feel with easy access to the Rim Trail and Bright Angel Trailhead. Rooms are simpler and generally less expensive than El Tovar. Great for a more casual, laid-back experience and closer access to scenic lookout points along the Rim.

Activities for December:

December at the Grand Canyon is quieter, with fewer crowds, which is ideal for a peaceful visit. Temperatures can be cold, especially in the mornings and evenings, so layering is key. Intense hiking isn’t recommended if you’re in dressier attire, but there are plenty of accessible options to enjoy the views and scenery.

  • Walk along the Rim Trail near the village—flat, paved sections allow for easy strolls and stunning overlooks without strenuous effort.
  • Visit iconic viewpoints such as Mather Point, Yavapai Point, and Grandview Point for classic photo opportunities.
  • Take the shuttle bus to Hermit’s Rest viewpoints, which provides beautiful scenery without needing to hike long distances.
  • Consider a guided ranger program or a short interpretive walk to learn more about the geology and history of the Canyon.
  • If weather permits, a sunrise or sunset view is highly recommended, as the light in December is magical and the crowds are small.

Additional Tips:

  • Dress warmly in layers, with sturdy shoes suitable for icy patches that may appear on sidewalks or trails.
  • Check shuttle schedules, as winter service is reduced compared to summer months.
  • If staying at El Tovar, you can enjoy its indoor ambiance and dining for a cozy evening without leaving the lodge, which is convenient in colder weather.

Overall, if you want a festive, classic Grand Canyon experience with convenience and comfort, El Tovar is worth the splurge. For a more casual, budget-friendly stay while still being right at the Rim, Bright Angel Lodge is an excellent choice. Both provide easy access to the highlights without needing strenuous hiking.
