TWOV -- Same Entry/Exit Airport?

For TWOV, do the entry and exit need to be out of the same city or airport?

For example, can I fly into China at PEK and then leave the country from PKX airport?

Thanks

The Transit Without Visa (TWOV) or 144-hour visa-free transit policy in China allows travelers from certain countries to stay in designated cities for up to 144 hours (6 days) without obtaining a Chinese visa, provided they meet specific conditions. One common question is whether the entry and exit points in China need to be the same city or airport.

For the 144-hour TWOV policy, it is generally required that the entry and exit occur within the same city or the designated region. The key rule is that the policy applies to certain metropolitan areas or regions, and the traveler must enter and exit within that designated area. Simply put, you cannot enter one city and exit from a completely different city unless both cities are part of the same TWOV region.

Regarding your example of flying into Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) and leaving from Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX):

  • Both PEK and PKX are within the same Beijing municipality.
  • Therefore, entering at PEK and exiting at PKX is allowed under the 144-hour TWOV policy, because both airports are part of the Beijing TWOV area.

Important considerations include:

  • Your onward flight must be to a third country or region (not back to China) within the 144-hour period.
  • You must hold valid travel documents, including a passport from a qualifying country.
  • You must provide proof of onward travel and confirmed accommodation within the TWOV city/region.

In summary, as long as both entry and exit points are within the same TWOV city or designated region, you do not need to use the exact same airport. Beijing is one city with two airports, so using PEK for entry and PKX for exit is fully compliant with the policy.
