Solo trip to San Diego

I’m thinking about a solo trip to SD approx June 12-22. What should I consider doing? Is it safe going by myself. I really just want beach time, good food but I don’t want to be restricted because I’m solo. Female late 50’s. Thank you

San Diego is an excellent choice for a solo trip—especially for a woman in her 50s—because it’s generally safe, laid-back, and full of beautiful beaches, scenic neighborhoods, and great food. June is a popular time to visit, and although early June often has the marine layer known as “June Gloom,” you’ll still have plenty of beautiful afternoons, warm temperatures, and long days to explore.

Most visitors find San Diego very comfortable to navigate alone. Areas like La Jolla, Coronado, Pacific Beach (PB), Mission Bay, Little Italy, and Liberty Station are well-trafficked and safe for solo travelers during the day and early evening. You’ll have no trouble dining alone, relaxing on the beach, or exploring the city without feeling restricted in any way.

If you want beach time, good food, and a relaxed environment, below are some of the top things to consider for your trip.

  • La Jolla Cove & La Jolla Shores – One of the most picturesque areas in California. Great for strolling, safe for solo travelers, and full of restaurants and scenic walks. You can kayak, snorkel, or simply relax on the sand.
  • Coronado Beach – Wide, clean, and consistently one of the safest-feeling beaches in California. Perfect for long walks and watching the sunset near the Hotel del Coronado.
  • Pacific Beach & Mission Beach – Lively beach boardwalks with plenty of places to sit, read, or people-watch. Great for an easygoing day by the water.

San Diego has a wonderful food scene, and solo diners fit in perfectly. Whether you prefer casual or upscale, you’ll find plenty of options that didn’t require reservations months in advance.

  • Little Italy – One of the best dining neighborhoods in the city with a huge range of cafes, bakeries, seafood, and Italian restaurants. Very safe, lively, and enjoyable to walk around alone.
  • Liberty Public Market – Perfect for solo travelers who want variety without committing to a full sit-down meal. Great atmosphere and easy to navigate.
  • La Jolla Village – Upscale, scenic, and full of excellent restaurants—great for date-night-for-yourself style dinners.

Beyond beaches and food, San Diego has plenty of relaxed, interesting activities that work beautifully for solo travelers. You can mix peaceful time with light sightseeing depending on your mood.

  • Balboa Park – A huge cultural park filled with gardens, architecture, and museums. Safe during the day and easy to wander on your own.
  • Old Town San Diego – Interesting historic area with shops, restaurants, and cultural displays; fun to explore and great for a midday outing.
  • Harbor Cruise or Whale Watching – Low-pressure, beautiful activities that are perfect for solo adventurers looking for something memorable.

For safety, normal big-city precautions apply, but San Diego is generally very comfortable for solo female travelers. Stick to well-trafficked areas at night, avoid secluded beach areas after dark, and use rideshare when needed. Most beach towns and tourist areas feel very safe, especially compared to larger cities.

Overall, San Diego offers a relaxed, friendly environment with plenty to do at your own pace. You can spend your mornings at the beach, your afternoons exploring fun neighborhoods, and your evenings enjoying excellent food—all without ever feeling out of place as a solo traveler.
