Shenzhen visit
Planning to stay overnight in Shenzhen, in the middle of a week long HongKong trip. Will leave our suitcases at our HongKong accommodation and just travel with carry on. Curious as to whether my original thoughts of heading over and back early Saturday, returning late Sunday is the best plan ? Is the border crossing too busy on a weekend to make more sense to plan a Sunday -Monday trip ? In addition, is the Mandarin Oriental a good position for tourists looking for local food spots, massages and shopping ? Also looking at Four Seasons, St Regis and Park Hyatt. Ideally would like to be able to walk everywhere. Have navigated the trains there before, so happy to use public transport
Visiting Shenzhen for an overnight trip from Hong Kong is very doable, especially if you are traveling light with just carry-on luggage. Planning a Saturday-Sunday trip is generally fine, but there are a few points to consider regarding border crossings, hotel location, and sightseeing options.
Border Crossing Considerations:
- Weekend crossings, especially at popular points like Lo Wu or Futian (Lok Ma Chau), can be busier due to both locals and tourists. Lines may be longer, particularly mid-morning to early afternoon.
- Going early Saturday morning is generally better than Sunday afternoon for entering Shenzhen, as Sunday evenings can be congested with people returning to Hong Kong.
- Monday departures tend to be lighter at borders compared to Sundays, so a Sunday-Monday trip may offer smoother return transit.
- If using the Hong Kong MTR to Shenzhen, try to avoid peak commuting hours (7:30–9:30 AM and 5:30–7:30 PM) to minimize delays.
Hotel Location and Options:
For walking access to local food, shopping, and massages, the central districts such as Futian CBD or Luohu are ideal. The hotels you mentioned are all high-end options but vary slightly in location convenience:
- Mandarin Oriental, Shenzhen: Located in Futian, convenient for shopping malls like Coco Park and near public transport. Good for dining and local food, but less “walking street” style than Luohu.
- Four Seasons Shenzhen: Also in Futian, central for business district attractions, shopping, and fine dining.
- St. Regis Shenzhen: Located near the Ping An Finance Center, excellent for luxury shopping and city views, but not as close to traditional street food areas.
- Park Hyatt Shenzhen: Futian CBD location, similar benefits as Mandarin Oriental and Four Seasons. Easy metro access to other parts of the city.
Public Transport & Walking:
- Shenzhen has a very efficient metro system, so using the MTR to explore is convenient and fast.
- If you want to focus on walking to restaurants, street markets, and small shops, staying in the Luohu district or Futian CBD near Coco Park is preferable.
- The hotels in Futian (Mandarin Oriental, Four Seasons, Park Hyatt) provide easy access to malls, spas, and restaurants within a short walking distance, but you’ll still need public transport to explore more traditional neighborhoods.
Recommendation:
- For minimal border stress, consider leaving Hong Kong early Saturday or Sunday morning and returning Sunday late afternoon or Monday morning.
- If your priority is luxury, walking access to restaurants, and shopping convenience, Mandarin Oriental or Four Seasons in Futian are excellent choices.
- For a balance between traditional Shenzhen markets and city amenities, staying closer to Luohu could be more interesting, though luxury options are slightly more limited.
Overall, your original Saturday-Sunday plan is feasible but slightly busier at the borders than Sunday-Monday. Staying in Futian provides a good mix of convenience, walking access, and metro connectivity for sightseeing and dining.
