Jiankou Zhengbeikou Tower
Hi
I first wanted to do the Jiankou - Mutianyu hike but it is apparently closed. Can you still go to Zhengbeikou Tower to catch the sunrise?
Kind Regards
Philip
Jiankou section of the Great Wall is known for its steep and rugged terrain, and some parts, including the popular Jiankou to Mutianyu hike, are officially closed due to safety concerns. However, certain areas like the Zhengbeikou Tower can sometimes still be accessed by experienced hikers, though it involves risks and unofficial paths.
Here are some points to consider:
- Zhengbeikou Tower is located in a more remote and steep part of Jiankou. The paths are often unmaintained and can be slippery, especially in the early morning or after rain.
- Access to this area is unofficial, meaning there may not be marked trails, and no safety measures are provided. Local guides are sometimes available and highly recommended for navigation and safety.
- Catching the sunrise from Zhengbeikou Tower is possible, but it requires starting very early, usually before dawn, to reach the tower in time. Be prepared with headlamps, proper hiking shoes, and warm clothing.
Alternative safer options for sunrise views include:
- Mutianyu section: Officially open and safe, with cable car or chairlift access to the higher points for sunrise photography.
- Huanghuacheng section: Less crowded, partially restored, and offers sunrise views over water and mountains.
In summary, it is physically possible to reach Zhengbeikou Tower for sunrise, but it carries significant risks. Hiring a local guide or choosing a safer section is strongly advised for first-time visitors or those unfamiliar with rugged hiking terrain.
