Drone in Shangai
Hi everyone,
I'm having a one-day layover in Shanghai and wanted to ask if it's allowed to carry drones in my carry-on luggage. I don't intend to use them in China.
Carrying drones in China, even if only in your luggage and without intending to use them, is subject to strict regulations. While Shanghai’s airports allow passengers to bring drones in carry-on or checked baggage, there are several rules and precautions to be aware of.
Here’s a detailed overview:
- Carry-on vs checked baggage: Most airlines and Chinese airport security require drones with lithium batteries to be carried in your hand luggage rather than checked baggage. Batteries must comply with airline limits, usually under 100Wh per battery without airline approval.
- Drone registration: Since you do not intend to fly the drone in China, registration with the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) is not necessary for transit. Registration is only required for drones that are flown within Chinese airspace.
- Battery handling: Remove the batteries and ensure terminals are insulated (tape or battery cases). Carry a maximum of 2–3 spare batteries in carry-on luggage, in line with airline regulations.
- Security checks: At Shanghai airports, inform the security personnel that you have a drone and spare batteries in your carry-on. This avoids confusion or delays at the X-ray scanner.
- Transit restrictions: If you are staying airside and not passing through Chinese immigration, generally there is minimal issue. If you plan to leave the airport during your layover, ensure the drone remains packed and unused.
Summary tips:
- Keep the drone packed in a hard case or protective bag.
- Carry batteries in carry-on only, with terminal protection.
- Notify security at check-in and screening points.
- Do not attempt to fly the drone in China without registration, even for a short demonstration.
In conclusion, carrying your drone in carry-on luggage for a layover in Shanghai is generally allowed, provided batteries are handled correctly and you follow airline and airport security procedures. Avoid checking the drone in unless the airline explicitly allows it.
