Luggage at airport
Research has shown that there is no luggage storage at LAX. My husband & I have a 10 hour daytime layover in November. We dont want to drive but will catch public transport somewhere. We are thinking of hiring a car at the airport simply to keep our luggage in for the day- not drive it anywhere. Thoughts?
It's great that you're planning to explore Los Angeles during your layover! While LAX doesn't have luggage storage, there are a few ways you can handle your luggage without the need to rent a car solely for storage. Let’s look at your options:
### 1. Renting a Car Just for Luggage Storage
Renting a car just to store your luggage is technically a viable option, but it’s probably not the most efficient or economical choice. You'll still need to pay for the rental, insurance, and possibly parking fees, even if you're not driving it. Additionally, LAX parking can be expensive, and you’ll be tied to the airport. Here's what to consider:
- Cost: You’ll be paying for the car rental, which can add up for just a day of storage, especially when you include insurance and gas (even if you're not driving).
- Parking Fees: LAX parking rates range from about $10–$40 per day, depending on which lot you choose. If you're not driving, you still have to pay the parking fee for the rental car, which could end up being an unnecessary expense.
- Convenience: You're limited to keeping the car parked at the airport and may not be able to move around easily if you want to leave the area or explore the city.
### 2. Luggage Storage Services (More Practical Option)
Rather than renting a car just for luggage storage, you might want to consider one of the following luggage storage options available near LAX:
- LAX Luggage Storage Services: There are independent luggage storage services near LAX, such as LAX Luggage Storage and LAX Luggage Storage & Delivery, where you can store your bags for a flat rate. They offer both short- and long-term storage options and are more cost-effective than renting a car.
- City Baggage Storage: If you want to venture further into LA, there are services in the city center like Vertoe and Bagbnb, where you can store your luggage at a local shop or hotel. You can take public transportation from the airport to these locations and enjoy your time in LA without being burdened by your luggage.
- Hotel Concierge Services: Some hotels near the airport offer luggage storage for a fee, even if you're not a guest. It's worth calling ahead to check availability and prices.
### 3. Public Transport Options to Explore LA
If you’re set on not driving, Los Angeles has good public transport options for getting around without the need for a rental car:
- Metro: The FlyAway Bus offers a direct route to popular areas like Santa Monica, Hollywood, and Downtown LA. From these areas, you can use the Metro to explore even further.
- Public Buses: There are also many local buses that connect major attractions in the city, like Venice Beach, West Hollywood, and Downtown LA.
### Conclusion:
While renting a car just for luggage storage is an option, I would recommend considering luggage storage services instead. They're more economical and convenient, and you’ll have the flexibility to explore the city without worrying about the car rental and parking fees. Los Angeles has plenty to offer, so taking the time to enjoy your layover will be well worth it!
