Suggest a challenging hike to book with a guide
I am down the rabbit hole of Yosemite family vacation planning. My husband and I are intermediate to advanced level hikers, our two children are not. They are however active and athletic 11 and 13 year olds who should be able to handle a full day of hiking. :)
We have a number of moderate hikes planned as a family, and I would like to book a guide for something more challenging. Any advice on hikes that would be fun for our entire group and worthy of a tour guide?
Thank you!
Yosemite offers a wide range of hikes suitable for experienced hikers who want a challenge, while still being doable for active children around 11–13. Booking a guided hike is an excellent way to tackle more technical trails safely and gain deeper insights into the park’s geology, ecology, and history.
For your group, here are several guided hike options to consider:
- Half Dome (via Cable Route): This is Yosemite’s most iconic challenging hike. It’s a long day (14–16 miles round trip) with significant elevation gain (~4,800 feet). A guide can provide safety tips for the cables and pacing advice. Your athletic kids should manage if they are prepared for a full-day effort and are comfortable with heights.
- Upper Yosemite Falls to Columbia Rock Loop: This hike gives excellent views of Yosemite Valley and involves steep sections, but is more moderate than Half Dome. With a guide, you can learn about the rock formations, waterfalls, and native flora. It’s about 7–8 miles round trip with substantial elevation gain.
- North Dome or Sentinel Dome via the Yosemite Valley trail: North Dome offers Half Dome views without the cables and is less crowded. Sentinel Dome is shorter (2.2 miles loop) but steep, offering 360-degree panoramic views. A guide can add interpretive value and help with pacing for kids.
- Taft Point and the Pohono Trail Extension: Taft Point involves dramatic cliffs and expansive views of Yosemite Valley. A guide can help navigate the exposed sections safely and provide insights on geology and glacial history. Combined with the Pohono Trail, this can make a moderate-to-challenging day hike.
Tips for booking a guided hike with kids:
- Choose guides familiar with family groups—they can adjust pacing and provide breaks as needed.
- Confirm the total distance, elevation gain, and difficulty so your kids are prepared physically and mentally.
- Check whether the guide provides snacks, water, and emergency gear or if you need to bring your own.
- Consider starting early to avoid crowds and maximize daylight, especially for longer hikes like Half Dome.
Overall, guided hikes provide safety, enrichment, and a chance to tackle challenging trails you might not feel comfortable doing alone. For your group, Half Dome (if permitted and prepared) or North Dome combined with interpretive insights is probably the most rewarding option for a full-day adventure.
