A family vacation in SF?

We haven't been back to SF for several years. Currently we are planning a last minute trip while kids are on summer break. After researching, SF flight fare came as the least expensive travel option. Could anyone please share your recent experiences traveling there in terms of safety and fun...? Is it still fun and interesting as it has been for decades? Any areas we should avoid as domestic tourists? Thank you!

San Francisco is still a fantastic and fun destination for families, and most visitors—domestic or international—continue to have excellent experiences. The city has gone through ups and downs, but the places where tourists spend their time remain lively, safe, and full of things to do. With a bit of normal big-city awareness and choosing the right neighborhoods, you can absolutely have an enjoyable trip.

Most tourist-friendly areas are clean, busy, and perfectly comfortable for families. You’ll find great food, iconic scenery, and lots of indoor/outdoor activities for kids. Safety issues tend to be very localized and easy to avoid with basic planning.

Below is everything you need to know, including what areas are great, what to avoid, what’s changed, and what’s still wonderful.

What’s fun and still great about SF right now?

  • The classics are still fantastic: Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf, Pier 39, Chinatown, Golden Gate Park, Ferry Building, cable cars, Alcatraz, and the Presidio all remain safe and very enjoyable for families.
  • Plenty of family activities: Exploratorium, California Academy of Sciences, the zoo, playgrounds in Golden Gate Park, bike rentals, boat tours, and museums remain well-run and busy.
  • Beautiful outdoor space: The city’s outdoor highlights—Land’s End, Crissy Field, Baker Beach, and the Presidio—have only gotten better with renovations and new trails.
  • Public transit and walking are still very doable: The core tourist areas are walkable, with buses, Muni, and cable cars connecting most places visitors want to go.

Is SF safe for families right now?

Yes, as long as you stay in the typical tourist and family-friendly areas. The vast majority of safety issues happening in SF are confined to specific blocks, not the city at large. You will likely feel perfectly comfortable in the neighborhoods where visitors spend time.

You’ll still see some homelessness in various parts of the city—this has always been the case in SF—but it is mostly concentrated in certain districts you can easily avoid.

Areas that are generally safe and great for families

  • Fisherman’s Wharf / North Beach – very touristy, busy, and safe; tons of restaurants and attractions.
  • Marina District – great hotel options, very walkable, close to Presidio and waterfront.
  • Presidio – quiet, beautiful, amazing views and trails.
  • Nob Hill / Russian Hill – classic SF neighborhoods with cable car access.
  • Embarcadero / Ferry Building Area – clean, lively, and excellent for walking.
  • Pacific Heights / Cow Hollow – peaceful, upscale, and safe.

Areas most tourists prefer to avoid

  • Tenderloin – concentrated homelessness and open drug use; not unsafe for driving through, but not an area to walk or stay.
  • Civic Center / parts of Mid-Market – same issues as Tenderloin; nothing tourist-oriented here.
  • SoMa (south of Market) – block-by-block variation; some parts are fine near major museums, but other blocks feel uncomfortable late at night.

Where you should consider staying with kids

  • Fisherman’s Wharf: extremely convenient, walkable, and family-friendly. Easy for first timers or families.
  • Marina/Cow Hollow: many affordable small hotels and motels, great restaurant streets (Chestnut and Union), safe and clean.
  • North Beach: Italian neighborhood with lots of food, near Chinatown and cable cars.
  • Nob Hill: quiet, classic, central, and good access to cable cars.

Tips for a smooth and safe trip

  • Avoid leaving anything in your rental car. Car break-ins are localized but real. If you treat your car as empty at all times, you’re fine.
  • Stick to main pedestrian areas at night—Fisherman’s Wharf, Embarcadero, Union Square’s immediate vicinity, and North Beach are all fine.
  • Plan your days around neighborhoods to reduce travel and make the days feel easier for kids.
  • Biking at Crissy Field or Golden Gate Park is one of the best family activities in the city.

Is SF still worth it?

Absolutely. Despite negative headlines, most visitors continue to have a wonderful time. The main attractions are still exactly what you remember: gorgeous, historic, scenic, and fun. Families especially tend to enjoy the mix of city energy and outdoor beauty.
