Moana Surfrider Construction or Alternatives?

We're going to be in Waikiki for a few days at the very end of July and beginning of August. Does anyone have updated info on the construction situation? Or for those who've been recently, how big of a problem was it?

I'm debating between the Surfrider and either Outrigger Beach Resort or Reef, since the Royal Hawaiian only has rooms in our price point (ahem, <$2K/night!?) in the old wing. Would love some info!

As of recent reports from travelers staying at the Moana Surfrider, the ongoing construction is mostly limited to certain sections of the hotel and does not affect the entire property. The hotel has been proactive about minimizing guest disruption, but noise can occur during normal working hours, usually in the mornings. Some guests staying in the historic wing or oceanfront rooms farther from construction areas have reported very little disturbance.

If budget is a consideration and you are looking at the older wing, you may still get a classic feel of the Surfrider with ocean views, though the furnishings and bathrooms may be less updated. For some travelers, the charm of the historic building outweighs minor construction inconveniences.

Alternative options you mentioned—Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort and The Reef—can offer a quieter experience as they are either not undergoing construction or have fewer visible renovation projects at this time. Both are well-located on Waikiki Beach, provide easy beach access, and generally receive positive reviews for comfort and amenities.

  • Moana Surfrider – Historic charm, beachfront, construction mostly limited to some areas; oceanfront rooms in historic wing may still be quieter.
  • Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort – Central Waikiki location, beach access, no major reported construction recently; solid mid-range option.
  • The Reef on Waikiki Beach – Newer property, modern rooms, quieter atmosphere, also very close to the beach; good value depending on room type.

Additional considerations:

  • Ask the hotel directly which room sections are farthest from current construction.
  • If quietness is a priority, early mornings may still see occasional construction noise at Moana Surfrider.
  • Check recent TripAdvisor or Google reviews from the last month or two for up-to-date guest experiences regarding noise and overall satisfaction.

Overall, if staying in a historic wing oceanfront room fits your budget, the Moana Surfrider can still be a great experience. Otherwise, Outrigger or The Reef provide reliable alternatives without the concern of nearby construction.
