Chairman Mao Memorial Hall
Hi, i see that reservation is mandatory for this hall even if it is free.
However i was not able to reserve on the website or using Wechat because a chinese phone number is mandatory.
Is there a solution ?
Visiting the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall in Tiananmen Square does require a reservation, even though admission is free. The main challenge for foreign visitors is that the official online reservation platforms and the WeChat mini-program typically require a Chinese phone number to receive the verification code.
Here are practical ways to work around this issue:
- Arrive early and try on-site registration: Some foreign visitors report that showing up early in the morning at the Memorial Hall allows you to register in person. Staff may allow ticket collection with your passport and a completed form. This is not officially guaranteed, but often works if you are flexible.
- Use a local travel agency or guide: Many Beijing-based agencies can reserve tickets on your behalf using their local phone numbers. You can contact a trusted agency ahead of time and ask them to make the reservation for your group.
- Ask your hotel concierge for help: Major hotels in Beijing are familiar with the process and may assist international guests with making reservations using their local phone number.
- Consider using a Chinese SIM card temporarily: Purchasing a prepaid SIM card with a Chinese phone number at the airport or city stores allows you to complete the online reservation directly.
Additional tips:
- Arrive at the Memorial Hall early, around opening time (usually 8:00–9:00 AM), because the number of visitors allowed is limited and queues can form quickly.
- Bring your passport at all times, as it will be required for entry verification.
- The visit is generally brief, as photography is not allowed inside and visitors follow a one-way route.
In summary, while direct online booking may not work without a Chinese phone number, using a travel agency, hotel assistance, or arriving early for in-person registration are the most common solutions for foreign visitors.
