Which flight from PHL - FAI?
Both United for 4 people:
PHL 12:19 PM - FAI 7:30 PM ( 2 HR layover in Chicago) - $733
or
PHL 10:10 AM - FAI 8:01 PM (4 HR layover Denver) - $626
I have never been to Denver airport and it has been years since going to Chicago airport... which would you coose and why:)
Both flight options you listed have their pros and cons, and the best choice depends on your priorities—whether you value shorter travel time, lower cost, or a more comfortable connection experience.
Option 1: PHL 12:19 PM - FAI 7:30 PM (2-hour layover in Chicago) - $733
- Shorter overall travel time (7 hours 11 minutes of flight + 2-hour layover).
- Chicago O'Hare (ORD) is a major hub with clear signage, plenty of amenities, and usually efficient connections.
- 2-hour layover is tight but generally sufficient if flights are on time. However, delays in either segment could make connections stressful.
- Higher price ($733) but less time in transit.
Option 2: PHL 10:10 AM - FAI 8:01 PM (4-hour layover in Denver) - $626
- Lower cost ($107 cheaper for 4 passengers, totaling $428 saved).
- Longer layover (4 hours), giving plenty of buffer for connections, airport navigation, and even grabbing a meal.
- Denver International Airport (DEN) is very large and spread out; gates can be far apart, so a 4-hour layover is safer for peace of mind.
- Longer overall travel day (about 10 hours including layover), which could be tiring for four people, especially with kids or heavy luggage.
Other considerations:
- Consider your tolerance for airport navigation: ORD is more compact than DEN, but both are major hubs with shuttle options and clear signage.
- If the goal is to minimize stress and you don’t mind a longer day, the Denver connection gives more cushion.
- If you prefer to get to Fairbanks faster and are okay with a tighter connection, the Chicago option is preferable.
- Check recent airline reviews for both airports regarding delays, security wait times, and gate changes.
Recommendation: For a first trip with four people, I would lean toward the Denver option with the 4-hour layover. While it’s a longer day, the extra time reduces stress and gives flexibility for unexpected delays, especially if you haven’t navigated Denver Airport before. You also save nearly $430 for your group, which could go toward activities or meals in Alaska.
