Places to stop between Denali and Anchorage?

Group of 10 traveling in late August. We will have already done a Glacier Landing from Talkeetna and are looking for things to do during our travel day from Denali back to Anchorage?

Scenic stops? Short hikes?

Traveling from Denali National Park back to Anchorage offers plenty of scenic opportunities and short hikes, making the drive enjoyable for a group of 10. Late August is a great time as the fall colors may be starting, wildlife is still active, and summer crowds are beginning to thin.

Suggested scenic stops and short hikes along the Parks Highway (Alaska Route 3):

  • Denali Viewpoints: Even after leaving the park, keep an eye out for viewpoints along the highway that provide excellent views of Denali and surrounding peaks. Pull-outs and rest areas often have interpretive signs and short trails.
  • Byers Lake: Located about 2.5 hours south of Denali, Byers Lake Recreation Site offers picnic areas and easy lakeside trails. A short stroll to the lake provides beautiful views and possible wildlife sightings.
  • Riley Creek and Savage River areas: Just outside Denali, these areas offer short, flat trails such as the Savage Alpine Trailhead or the Savage River Loop for gentle walks.
  • Talkeetna Lakes Park: About halfway to Anchorage, a nice spot for a short hike or picnic with views of the Alaska Range.
  • Willow and Houston: Small towns along the route offer pull-offs for river views and some short boardwalk trails. Willow Creek State Recreation Site has a riverfront boardwalk ideal for a quick stop.
  • Deshka Landing / Nancy Lake State Recreation Area: Slight detour off the highway, these areas provide accessible short trails and wetlands ideal for birdwatching or a gentle hike.

Additional tips for the trip:

  • Plan for multiple short stops rather than long hikes, especially with a group of 10 to keep everyone comfortable.
  • Bring snacks and water for roadside picnics, as services between Denali and Anchorage are limited.
  • Keep your camera ready for wildlife sightings—moose, bears, and Dall sheep are often visible along the Parks Highway.
  • Use real-time navigation and apps like AllTrails or the Alaska State Parks website to check trail conditions and accessibility, as some trails may start to close with the onset of early fall weather.

Overall, the drive from Denali to Anchorage can be a scenic, enjoyable day with multiple short stops, gentle hikes, and wildlife viewing opportunities. Allow plenty of time to explore the natural beauty along the route without rushing, making the journey as memorable as the destinations themselves.
