1st Week in August in Anchorage

Our flight will land in Anchorage Aug 2nd at 1:30 am. I have booked the Hyatt Place-Midtown for that initial night.

Then we will rent a car and drive to Denali. for 2 nights at the Denali Dome Homes.

Next we will drive back to Anchorage for 1 night to catch the Coastal Classic train to Seward, the following morning where we will spend 2 nights at Spruce Pines. {we don't have this Anchorage lodging yet_)

Finally we will board Celebrity Summit for cruise to Vancouver..

Questions:

1. Comments on Hyatt Place-Midtown, Denali Dome Homes and Spruce Pines accommodations?

2. Should we stay at Hyatt Place-Midtown for the 2nd night in Anchorage, or is there somewhere better, especially given the train leaves 6;30.

3. ALL SUGGESTIONS ON EXCURSIONS/THINGS TO DO ARE APPRECIATED.

Your planned itinerary for early August in Anchorage, Denali, and Seward looks well-paced, giving you time to enjoy the Alaskan interior, train ride, and cruise without feeling too rushed.

Regarding accommodations:

  • Hyatt Place-Midtown (Anchorage): This is a reliable, modern hotel in a convenient Midtown location. Rooms are clean and spacious, and they offer free breakfast, which is helpful for early departures. The main drawback is that it’s not particularly scenic or “Alaskan” in feel, but it’s safe and practical.
  • Denali Dome Homes: This property is well-regarded for its proximity to Denali National Park, unique dome-style lodging, and easy access to park shuttle pick-ups. It’s comfortable and gives you a more immersive experience near the wilderness.
  • Spruce Pines (Seward): Located near the waterfront, Spruce Pines is convenient for accessing Kenai Fjords excursions. Rooms are comfortable, and the location allows for quick access to restaurants and boat tours. Confirm your booking soon, as summer is high season.

For your second night in Anchorage before the Coastal Classic train:

  • Since your train leaves at 6:30 am, staying at Hyatt Place-Midtown is fine but consider lodging closer to the train station to minimize morning logistics. Options like Hotel Captain Cook or Anchorage Marriott Downtown are within a few minutes’ drive or taxi to the station, allowing an earlier, stress-free departure.
  • If you prioritize convenience over cost, one of the downtown hotels might be a better choice for that night.

Excursion and activity suggestions:

  • Anchorage: Explore the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail (walk or bike), Anchorage Museum, and local seafood at the waterfront.
  • Denali: Take a park shuttle or guided tour into Denali National Park. Consider a day-long wildlife bus tour to see bears, moose, caribou, and Dall sheep. Short hikes around the park entrance, like Horseshoe Lake Trail, are great for a first-time visit.
  • Seward: Kenai Fjords National Park boat tour to see glaciers, marine wildlife, and calving events. Kayaking in Resurrection Bay or around the harbor can be a fun option. Visit the Alaska SeaLife Center, which is excellent for families and wildlife enthusiasts.
  • Along the Coastal Classic train: Sit on the right side for best views of Turnagain Arm, glaciers, and potential wildlife.

General tips:

  • Book Denali shuttle or excursions in advance for guaranteed spots in high season.
  • Start early for scenic drives and wildlife spotting, especially in Denali.
  • Keep in mind that August can be warm and buggy in the interior, so insect repellent and layered clothing are recommended.

Overall, your plan is solid: Hyatt Place for the first night works, consider a more central Anchorage hotel for the night before the train, Denali Dome Homes is an immersive experience, and Spruce Pines gives excellent access to Seward excursions.
