Best beach closest to john Wayne Airport
Hello, my family and I are going to Disneyland then end of July. We plan to spend a couple days at the beach after Disneyland. Which beaches do you all recommend that are closest to john Wayne Airport and have restaurants and shops within walking distance? Thank you in advance for your advice. I appreciate it very much!
John Wayne Airport (SNA) is very close to several excellent Orange County beaches, and all of the popular ones have plenty of restaurants, shops, and family-friendly areas within walking distance. Since you’re visiting at the end of July—a busy but beautiful time—you’ll want beaches that combine convenience, amenities, and an easy drive from the airport after Disneyland.
Below are the best beach options closest to SNA, along with what each offers for families, food, and walkable shopping.
Top Beaches Near John Wayne Airport With Walkable Dining & Shops
- Newport Beach – Balboa Peninsula
Great for families wanting a classic Southern California vibe. Balboa Pier and the Fun Zone area offer restaurants, snack stands, ice cream shops, and small stores all within steps of the sand. The boardwalk is flat and very walkable. The beach is wide, clean, and perfect for kids. About 15–20 minutes from the airport.
- Corona del Mar State Beach
One of the most beautiful beaches in Orange County and very family-friendly. Restaurants and cafés are a short walk up the hill in Corona del Mar Village (5–10 minutes). The beach itself is sheltered, great for swimming, and has restrooms and showers. Stunning scenery and easy access from SNA.
- Huntington Beach – Main Street / Pier
Also known as Surf City USA, this is a big, lively beach with a long pier, lots of surf shops, and a dense cluster of restaurants and stores right across the street on Main Street and at Pacific City shopping center. Great for families who want plenty to do and a fun, energetic atmosphere. About 20–25 minutes from SNA.
- Laguna Beach – Main Beach
The closest Laguna Beach area to SNA with the town directly across from the sand. Lots of boutiques, galleries, ice cream shops, and restaurants in every direction. The water here can be a bit rough for kids at times, but the scenery is stunning. Excellent option if you want a more artsy, walkable beach town. About 25 minutes from SNA.
How to Choose the Best Beach for Your Family
- For the most walkable restaurants and shops: Huntington Beach Pier or Laguna Beach Main Beach.
- For a relaxing family-friendly beach day: Corona del Mar or Newport Balboa Peninsula.
- For the shortest drive from the airport: Newport Beach areas (Newport Pier or Balboa Peninsula).
- For the most classic “California beach town” feel: Huntington Beach.
Because you’re visiting at the end of July, parking can get busy—arriving before 10 a.m. or in late afternoon is ideal. If you’re staying overnight near the beach, you’ll have much easier access and can simply walk to everything.
Overall, Newport Beach and Huntington Beach are your best all-around options for sandy beaches, nearby restaurants, and walkability from SNA. Laguna Beach is another excellent choice if you prefer a more scenic, boutique-town atmosphere. Any of these will make a perfect, relaxing couple of beach days after Disneyland.
