SFO Drive to Fort Bragg

Hi all - sorry this isn't specifically only about SF, but I couldn't find any other relevant forums.

My boyfriend and I are planning a week long road trip up north (we live in so cal). We plan to fly into SFO and rent a car. Drive up highway 1 to Fort Bragg (or further if we want!) Then drive back down the 101 back to SF.

My question is - is there anything amazing along that route we HAVE to stop or even stay a night for? Or should we just shoot straight up the 1 to get to Fort Bragg and enjoy more time up there? I am pretty familiar with the 101, but not so much PCH.

Thanks!

Driving from San Francisco up Highway 1 to Fort Bragg is one of the most scenic coastal road trips in California. While it’s tempting to drive straight to your destination, there are several amazing stops and potential overnight stays that can make the journey unforgettable.

Notable Stops Along Highway 1

  • Point Reyes National Seashore: Just north of San Francisco, this area offers breathtaking coastal cliffs, lighthouse views, and wildlife spotting (elk and seabirds). It’s a great spot for a short hike or picnic.
  • Tomales Bay & Marshall Store: Famous for fresh oysters and a relaxed coastal vibe. Perfect for lunch or a quick break.
  • Muir Beach & Stinson Beach: Beautiful beaches close to SF. Stinson Beach has easy access and can be a good early stop to stretch legs and enjoy the ocean.
  • Westport-Union Landing State Beach: Further north, less crowded, dramatic cliffs and ocean views, perfect for a short photo stop.
  • Glass Beach in Fort Bragg: Iconic colorful sea glass beach, a must-see in Fort Bragg itself.
  • MacKerricher State Park: Just south of Fort Bragg, offers boardwalk trails, tidepools, and potential seal sightings.

Potential Overnight Stops

  • Point Reyes or Inverness: Stay near the seashore for a night to enjoy sunset or sunrise and explore hiking trails without rushing.
  • Mendocino Village: A charming, historic town with great restaurants, coastal views, and unique shops. An overnight here allows a relaxed pace before continuing to Fort Bragg.

Tips for Your Trip

  • Highway 1 is winding and slower than 101, so allow extra time for driving and sightseeing.
  • Check tide schedules if you want to explore beaches or tidepools.
  • Bring layers: coastal fog and wind can make temperatures cooler than inland areas.
  • Plan meals around stops like Marshall Store, Mendocino, or local seafood restaurants for fresh and scenic dining.

In summary, while you can drive straight to Fort Bragg, taking your time and stopping at Point Reyes, Stinson Beach, Mendocino, and nearby coastal parks will make your journey more memorable. Even one overnight in Mendocino or Point Reyes will give you a chance to enjoy the scenic beauty and small-town charm along the way before returning via 101.
