Dog friendly transport

We are bringing our dog with us to SF, and want to at least bring him to parks, outside areas, etc. What’s the best way to get around - public transit or Uber with pets?

For what it’s worth we will only be there on a weekend and he is fully leash trained but has no muzzle (I’m unsure if that’s a requirement or not).

San Francisco is generally dog-friendly, but getting around with your dog requires knowing the rules for each mode of transport. Both public transit and rideshare options have pros and cons for weekend visits.

Public Transit:

  • MUNI buses and trains: Dogs are allowed on MUNI if they are in a carrier. For larger dogs, they may not be permitted on crowded trains or buses. There’s no muzzle requirement, but a leash is necessary if your dog is outside a carrier.
  • Ferries: Golden Gate Ferry and San Francisco Bay Ferry allow dogs onboard, usually on a leash, and this can be a scenic option if you’re visiting areas like Sausalito.
  • Streetcars and cable cars: Dogs are allowed on leash, but some cable cars can get crowded, and conductors may restrict boarding if it becomes unsafe.

Rideshare / Taxi:

  • Uber/Lyft: You can request a “pet-friendly” ride through some Uber options or contact the driver before confirming. Most drivers are happy to accommodate a well-behaved, leash-trained dog, especially for weekend trips when traffic is lighter.
  • Private car service: If you want maximum comfort and less stress for your dog, booking a pet-friendly private car is ideal. This ensures your dog can sit comfortably without navigating crowded public transit.

Tips for Getting Around with Your Dog:

  • Bring a leash at all times; muzzles are not required in most public areas but may be needed if requested for safety.
  • Choose destinations that are dog-friendly, like Crissy Field, Fort Mason, and the Presidio trails, which are outside and spacious.
  • Consider the weather and plan short trips with breaks for your dog to stretch and hydrate.

For a short weekend trip, rideshare options with pet-friendly drivers are generally more convenient and less stressful than navigating public transit, especially if your dog is not used to crowds or being in a carrier.
