Advice on trails along the Avenue of the Giants

Hi everyone!

We’ll be driving the Avenue of the Giants this summer (late July), and we’d love to stop and take a short hike or two to fully enjoy the redwoods.

Can anyone recommend your favorite walking trails or hikes along the Avenue? Ideally something scenic and peaceful.

Also, are there any must-see groves or special spots that you’d suggest we don’t miss?

Thanks so much in advance for any advice!

The Avenue of the Giants is one of the most scenic drives in California, and taking short hikes along the route is a wonderful way to experience the towering redwoods up close. Since you’re looking for scenic and peaceful trails, there are several stops that are particularly recommended for short walks and unique experiences.

Some of the best short hikes and walking trails along the Avenue include:

  • Founders Grove Nature Trail – This is a very popular and accessible spot with a 0.5-mile loop trail that passes some of the tallest and oldest redwoods. Interpretive signs provide information about the history of the grove, and there’s a famous fallen “Founder Tree” to see.
  • Drury-Chaney Grove – A quiet, lesser-known trail where you can walk among old-growth redwoods. The trail is short and easy, around 0.8 miles, and offers a more peaceful experience than the busier Founders Grove.
  • Lady Bird Johnson Grove – Located just off the Avenue, this trail is a 1.5-mile loop through a stunning old-growth forest. It’s well-maintained and provides a mix of shaded forest and occasional clearings with sunlight filtering through the canopy.
  • Humboldt Redwoods State Park Visitor Center Loop – Near the main visitor center, there are a few short trails ranging from 0.25 to 1 mile. It’s convenient for stretching your legs and learning about the park’s ecosystem.

Must-see groves and special spots not to miss:

  • Immortal Tree – Near Founders Grove, this redwood is estimated to be over 1,000 years old and is truly awe-inspiring.
  • Drive-through Tree near Myers Flat – While not a hike, it’s a fun and iconic photo opportunity to drive your car through a hollowed redwood.
  • Giant Tree at Dyerville – A quieter spot with impressive trees and some shaded picnic areas if you want to take a break.

Tips for visiting:

  • Arrive early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid crowds, especially at Founders Grove and Lady Bird Johnson Grove.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes, as the trails may have roots and uneven terrain.
  • Bring water and possibly a picnic, as some areas have benches and picnic spots.
  • Allow time to stop at scenic pullouts along the Avenue—sometimes the most magical views of the redwoods are just a short stroll from the parking areas.

With these stops, you’ll be able to enjoy both the grandeur of the redwoods and the peaceful atmosphere of the forest without feeling rushed along the Avenue of the Giants.
