Swimming holes and rafting

We are visiting the Redwoods (staying in Arcata) at the beginning of August. I know it’s often cool but I have kids that like to swim. Any good swimming holes near Arcata? What about rafting trips that start within an hour of Arcata. I saw some but they are almost 2 hours north.

Arcata is a great base for exploring the Redwoods, but as you mentioned, the water is often cool even in August. That said, there are several swimming spots and rafting options within about an hour’s drive that can work well for families with kids.

For swimming holes near Arcata:

  • Mad River: The Mad River has several calm spots for swimming, especially near Blue Lake or around Fieldbrook. Water can be chilly, but in August it’s usually tolerable on sunny days.
  • McKinleyville Lagoon / Little River: Shallow areas here can be good for younger kids and wading.
  • Trinity River (upper stretches): Just about an hour east, the Trinity has some sandy beaches and calm pools suitable for swimming. Make sure to check local conditions for safety.
  • Patrick’s Point State Park: While not exactly a traditional swimming hole, some small creek areas are suitable for wading for kids near the park’s trails.

For rafting within about an hour of Arcata:

  • Lower Mad River: Some companies offer guided rafting trips suitable for beginners and families. The river is calm with gentle rapids, ideal for kids.
  • Eel River (south of Fortuna / Scotia): About 45-60 minutes from Arcata, there are outfitters that provide family-friendly rafting and float trips. Most sections near Fortuna are moderate, safe, and scenic.
  • Humboldt Bay Kayaking / Canoeing: Not traditional rafting, but guided kayak tours in Humboldt Bay or nearby sloughs are fun for families and offer a water adventure experience without strong currents.

Tips:

  • Always check water levels and temperatures; summer low flows can make some areas safer, but the water is still cool.
  • Life jackets are recommended for kids even in shallow areas.
  • Book guided rafting trips in advance, as August can be busy with families and tourists.

With these options, you can balance swimming fun and mild adventure while staying close to Arcata.
