Day trips from DC?
Hi all. Gonna be in Alexandria, Va for a 3 day conference this month. Decided to make a family vacation out of it and are staying Saturday to Saturday. We want to use the hotel as a base and take day trips. What are some suggestions. We already have 2 days scheduled for DC capitol/mall area. Tossing around idea of NYC for a day or two but not sure if we're aiming for too much on that one. We'll have a car but also are open to mass transit. Thank you.
Alexandria, VA is an excellent base for both Washington DC sightseeing and a variety of easy, memorable day trips. With a full week, access to a car, and openness to trains, you can comfortably explore much of the mid-Atlantic region without feeling rushed. Since you already have two DC days planned, the rest of your trip can balance history, small towns, nature, and perhaps one bigger excursion.
Below are some of the best day trips from Alexandria, grouped by theme and realistic driving/train times, along with guidance about whether NYC is practical for a day or two.
Top Day Trips Close to Alexandria (Easy, 20–45 minutes)
- Old Town Alexandria (if you haven’t explored yet) – Historic streets, waterfront views, King Street shops and restaurants, Torpedo Factory Art Center, and pleasant walking. Great for a relaxing half-day.
- Mount Vernon – Just 20 minutes south. George Washington’s estate, gardens, museum, and beautiful views over the Potomac. A classic and very kid-friendly outing.
- Arlington National Cemetery – Easy via Metro or short drive. The Changing of the Guard, JFK Eternal Flame, Space Shuttle memorials, and sweeping views of the Mall.
- National Harbor – Waterfront dining, ferris wheel, boutiques, and riverside strolling. Great for families.
Historic and Cultural Day Trips (45–90 minutes)
- Annapolis, Maryland – 1 hour. A charming waterfront town with cobblestones, great seafood, the US Naval Academy, and sailing cruises. Very walkable and beautiful.
- Baltimore – 1–1.25 hours. Visit the Inner Harbor, the National Aquarium, Fort McHenry, Fell’s Point, or historic neighborhoods.
- Frederick, Maryland – Just over 1 hour. A lovely Main Street filled with shops, breweries, Civil War sites, and Catoctin Mountain nearby.
- Harpers Ferry, West Virginia – 1.25 hours. A stunning national historical park at the confluence of two rivers; great for hiking and history.
- Great Falls Park (Virginia or Maryland side) – 30–45 minutes. Beautiful waterfalls, scenic trails, and an easy half-day outdoor getaway.
Wine Country and Relaxed Countryside Trips (1–1.5 hours)
- Virginia Wine Country (Loudoun County) – 60–90 minutes. Dozens of vineyards and scenic mountain foothills. Perfect for a relaxing adult day out.
- Middleburg, VA – 1 hour. A refined, charming small town with boutiques, countryside inns, and wineries surrounding it.

Major Historical Sites (1–2 hours)
- Manassas National Battlefield Park – 45 minutes. Important Civil War history and pleasant walking trails.
- Antietam National Battlefield – 1.5 hours. One of the best-preserved Civil War battlegrounds with dramatic scenery and excellent interpretive programs.
- Monticello (Charlottesville, VA) – 2 hours. Thomas Jefferson’s estate plus great food and wineries nearby. A longer day but very rewarding.
Is New York City Realistic as a Day Trip?
You *can* reach NYC from Alexandria, but for most families it is not a relaxing or efficient day trip. Here’s what to consider:
- Driving: 4.5–6 hours each way depending on traffic (often unpredictable).
- Train: Amtrak from DC to NYC is 3–3.5 hours each way, often expensive last-minute.
- Time on the ground: You’d spend more time traveling than enjoying the city if attempting it in a single day.
Best recommendation: If you really want to include NYC, stay one night there instead of making it a day trip. That makes it worth the effort and far less exhausting.
More Practical “Big City” Options Instead of NYC
- Philadelphia – 2 to 2.5 hours by car or Amtrak. Independence Hall, Liberty Bell, Reading Terminal Market, museums, and great food.
- Richmond, VA – 1.5 hours. Great restaurants, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Civil War history, and James River parks.
- Williamsburg + Jamestown – 2.5 hours. Living history, reenactments, and colonial charm. Excellent for kids and families.
Final Suggestions
For a week based in Alexandria, mix one nature day, one history day, and one town/culture day alongside your two DC days. This creates a balanced, fun itinerary without excessive driving.
If you want a simple set of recommendations: choose Annapolis, Harper’s Ferry, and Mount Vernon—you’ll get waterfront charm, mountain scenery, and American history without going too far.
