Are Bikes safe?
We are visiting DC next month and are taking our bikes and staying 3 miles from the Mall in Arlington. We hope to use the bikes as our main source of transportation and plan to tour the Holocaust Museum and Museum of African American History. We have bike locks and are wondering if the bikes will be safe outside the Museums while we tour. Any other biking tips? Plan to do the Mt. Vernon trail on Sunday. Thank you in advance!
Washington DC is generally bike-friendly, with many dedicated bike lanes, trails, and bike racks near major attractions. Arlington and the National Mall areas are popular with cyclists, but as in any city, some precautions are necessary to ensure your bikes remain safe.
Regarding leaving your bikes outside museums like the Holocaust Museum and the National Museum of African American History:
- Both museums have bike racks outside, but they can get crowded. It's important to use a high-quality U-lock rather than a cable lock.
- Lock both the frame and one wheel to a fixed object if possible. If your bike has a quick-release front wheel, secure it or remove it and lock it with the frame.
- Avoid leaving bikes unattended for extended periods. Museums can take 1–2 hours to tour, which is generally fine if you use a secure lock.
- Consider registering your bike with a local police or city bike registry if available, which can aid recovery in case of theft.
Other biking tips for your DC visit:
- Use bike lanes and multi-use trails wherever possible, especially around the Mall. The city has a network of bike paths that keep you away from heavy traffic.
- The Mount Vernon Trail on Sunday is an excellent choice. It's scenic and well-maintained, running along the Potomac River from Arlington to Mount Vernon. Bring water and snacks for the ride.
- Be aware of pedestrians, especially around museums and popular sites. DC has many tourists walking on the same paths.
- If you want to avoid locking your bike outside, check if any museums have indoor bike parking or allow bike storage—some Smithsonian museums do on request.
- Consider a small bike light or reflective gear if you'll be riding early morning or evening for added visibility.
Overall, using bikes is a convenient and enjoyable way to explore DC and Arlington. With secure locks, attention to where you park, and awareness of traffic, your bikes should be reasonably safe while you visit the major museums and attractions.
