Mosquitoes

Are there a lot of mosquitoes in Palm Springs? I am planning a trip in August and may want to go to the oool.

I realize how hot it will probably be but I thought since it is the desert that there wouldn’t be many mosquitoes. When I go to Vegas, I never have a problem with mosquitoes. I just saw a YouTube video with a couple complaining about a couple getting constantly bit by them.

Palm Springs, located in the California desert, generally has a low mosquito population, especially when compared to more humid regions. The arid climate, high temperatures, and low rainfall during August make it less hospitable for mosquitoes. However, there are a few situations where you might encounter them:

  • Areas with standing water such as backyard pools, hot tubs, or fountains—mosquitoes need stagnant water to breed.
  • Lushly landscaped hotel grounds or resorts with dense vegetation and irrigation systems, which can create micro-habitats where mosquitoes thrive.
  • Dusk and early evening hours, particularly if the temperature drops slightly, as mosquitoes are most active during these times.

To minimize mosquito bites while enjoying your pool or outdoor areas, consider these precautions:

  • Use a mosquito repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus if you plan to be outside in the evening.
  • Ensure pool and hot tub water is properly chlorinated and maintained, as mosquitoes do not breed in moving or treated water.
  • Consider using fans near outdoor seating or pool areas—mosquitoes are weak fliers and will avoid breezy conditions.
  • Remove any standing water around your accommodation, including plant saucers or clogged drains, to reduce potential breeding grounds.

In summary, while you may encounter the occasional mosquito in Palm Springs, it is not typically a major problem, especially during the hot, dry days of August. Compared to Las Vegas, your risk is similar or slightly higher only if you spend time near irrigated gardens or evening pool areas. Daytime swimming and poolside lounging should generally be mosquito-free.
